A smash hit on its first release back in 2004, I, Robot
is based on the iconic collection of stories under the same name by Isaac Asimov, and the movie remains an enjoyable blend of sci-fi and action. Granted, there's an argument that there's a better film to be made from the source material, but director Alex Proyas' take on Asimov’s writing is not without merit.
Will Smith takes the lead role here, as a sceptical cop in a world surrounded by robots. It’s hardly a revelation to suggest that Smith’s concerns are not without substance, and from that point, the film prioritises slick action and quality effects ahead of all else. But it’s a fun ride, and easily rewatchable.
The film has enjoyed a conversion to 3D for this Blu-ray release, and this further enhances the already strong picture quality on offer. It’s a good showcase for the technology, and the fast-moving visuals are striking, and provide a strong workout for a solid home cinema setup.
The package isn’t shy when it comes to extra features, either, which dig into the making of the film. And it rounds off a welcome package for a movie that’s that bit better than you may have remembered. Recommended, especially if you’re looking for a workout for your 3D television. --Jon Foster
