Romance-aphobia,

Having really enjoyed 'Machine Nation' I was very much looking forward to the sequel. Being of a silly romantic nature I was hoping that some of the emotional restraints so prevalent in the first book would have fallen by the wayside as Alex and Kim got to know each other better. Unfortunately for me, and more so for Kim, it seemed that Alex had gone off her for reasons more to do with his addled and disturbed psyche than for anything concrete - men, what are they like! So with the love story on hold it was time to concentrate on the action. Luckily this had its compensations.As with the previous book, there was a clever yet economic use of language. The action moved along briskly whilst still creating an atmosphere of tangible threat through the liberal scattering of adjectives. The storyline was quite different to the first book and the introduction of many new characters whilst retaining a core of those from the previous offering served to enable this book to stand alone. Although I was fundamentally more interested in the relationship development rather than the murders, I still found myself caring about who the perpetrator was. And joy, breadcrumbs of expectation were thrown to the ducks of romanticism towards the end, so I'll be queuing up to get the third in the trilogy (if there is one in the future) to get my 'happily ever after' ending.

A real page-turner that's genuinely scary in places and quite philosophical throughout. You won't come away loving or hating robots but you will be left with a lot of food for thought about (wo)men and machines, scientific progress and lots more besides.

A chilling and un-put-downable thriller touching on robots, humans and a hundred things in between including the nature of humanity and ethical issues raised re: sentient machines. Undertones of slavery and religious fundamentalism very deftly bring 'Robophobia' into the past and present as well as the future. Not just for sci fi fans!
