No matter how hard you look, the brutal truth of the Robocop Trilogy is that there’s only one film in there that’s consistently worthy of your attention. Yet this keenly priced boxset does offer a chance to look at the two subsequent sequels with the benefit of a high-definition upgrade. And while both have major problems, they still make for intriguing viewing.

The original first, though. Robocop is a bone-fide science fiction masterpiece, an hour and a half of satire, violence, humour and the future of law enforcement. There’s a fairly conventional good vs evil story at the heart of it, yet this is nonetheless an ambitious film, gloriously realised on a low budget.

The sequel, Robocop 2, tries its damnedest to mirror the original, but it stumbles several times, not least for failing to carve out an identity of its own. So keen is it to be reverent to what went before, that the film suffers. But there are ideas here, and moments that make the movie well worth sitting through.

The third? Well, Robocop 3 is car crash cinema, sadly. Shoddy effects, and a decision to tame down the violent edge for a more child-friendly rating costs the film dear. It’s entertaining, albeit not for the right reasons.

Yet this remains a fascinating trilogy, boasting one excellent movie, one intriguing failure, and one film that’s as far removed from what made Robocop so interesting in the first place that it’s almost hard to resist. --Jon Foster

Product Description

Bring home the world’s toughest cop in stunning HI-DEF Blu-ray and relive every thrilling moment of these three groundbreaking action films!

From the director of Total Recall comes a high-adrenaline, “sleek” (Time) sci-fi thriller about a policeman who’s half man, half machine. When a good cop (Peter Weller) is murdered by criminals, innovative scientists piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called RoboCop. Tormented by the memory of his death, he is out for justice – and revenge.

Robocop 2
Robocop (Peter Weller) returns to battle his toughest opponent yet: his replacement! But not only is the new cyborg’s weaponry more sophisticated than Robocop’s, it contains the brain of a madman! It will take everything Robocop has to save Detroit – and himself – from total destruction.

Robocop 3
It’s Megacop vs. Megacorp in this edge-of-your-seat sci-fi action film. When a ruthless corporation that has a stranglehold on Motor City begins kicking families out of their homes for a new real estate project, Robocop (Robert Burke) and a band of renegades fight to save them in an all-out battle for Detroit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Robocop Has Ever Looked - Blu-ray Review 29 Jan 2013
By Pantheon TOP 500 REVIEWER
First: Amazon...stop lumping blu-ray and DVD reviews together - it's confusing and it renders many of them meaningless. Also, what's with reviews for VHS???? You can't buy them any more, and they look awful; so who cares about them? Just my opinion.

As for Robocop. I'm so glad I decided to buy this blu-ray box (despite the poor reviews). I've owned this film on VHS and twice on DVD and I can honestly say that this blu-ray is the best this film has ever looked or sounded. It's a dated movie with pretty shoddy special effects and all of that is glaringly obvious when watching this blu-ray; but if you love the film anyway that shouldn't matter to you.

Other people have listed the audio tracks, talked about quality, subtitles and the lack of extras...but what I couldn't find a reference to is which version of Robocop is in this boxset. Well, I've just finished watching it and I can assure everyone that it's the, far superior, Director's Cut on this disc.
So, if you don't care about the lack of extras this is the set to buy.

P.S. A request (or plea) to anyone who thinks about reviewing a blu-ray: Please, please, please, can you give details about picture quality, audio details, extras or your opinion on whether the blu is better than the DVD. These reviews that say "I like this film, it's good" or "I've just got my disc and watched it," mean absolutely nothing and are a waste of space.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Love Robocop 2! 31 July 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Everyone knows the rule of trilogies, the third one usually sucks. There are some exceptions- Nolan's Dark Knight movies, Bourne ( Now sadly tainted by that awful, unnecessary fourth entry.), but in general this rule always applies, and Robocop is a prime example of a trilogy gone wrong. Enough has been written about the original, it's an exemplary 80's sci fi movie that still impesses today. Thoughtful, melancholic, satirical and with a lot more to say than a film with THAT title should be able to deliver.
I also believe that Robocop 2 is a highly underrated sequel. To often lumped in with the third one as a failure, i think it's aged remarkably well. It retains the wit and violence of it's predecessor, and possesses a great cast, mostly returnees from the original. The finale is a spectacular display of destruction and heroics, that now seems oddly similar to the first Iron Man's (2008) climactic battle! I cannot defend the third, however. It really is rank. Special features are solely focused on Robocop 1, and are plentiful, it also has the gorier, nastier Director's Cut. Sadly 2 receives nothing more than trailers. Bah! Very good dvd transfers and sound quality on all three. Especially if you grew up watching these on vhs. Classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stay out of trouble. 19 Mar 2003
Robocop is a product of it’s time. Made in the mid eighties, shortly after ‘The Terminator’ the first film was a satire of the Regan/Thatcher era as well as being one of the best action films of that decade. The story concerns a self centred corporate business man’s attempt to create a Frankenstein robotic cop from a recent murdered police officer. It sounds silly but the entire film is wonderfully crafted. There are so many great moments in the film and not one moment is wasted. The film switches from tragedy to comedy to intense drama with incredibly smoothness. As well as some great action sequences and some laugh out loud funny moments there is real dramatic stuff here. When Robocop he catches up with Clarence, the man who killed him in the first place you can almost feel his sense of loss and anger. As Clarence is thrown through sheets of glass his natural arrogance turns to fear as he can’t stop the vengeful machine. Truly great stuff.
Robocop2 is not as good. It’s well written, written in fact by maverick comic book writer Frank Miller. The effects are fine and the fight at the end between the two Robocop’s is pretty cool. The problem isn’t as, some reviews have suggested over the years, that it lacks humour, R2 does have good gags it’s just overwhelmingly unpleasant. The film is incredibly violent and it has numbing effect after a while. I really wouldn’t let your kids watch this one. It isn’t too bad but it simply isn’t as satisfying as the first one.
Robocop3 is again not as good. Again it’s well written and some of the story ideas are great. No where near as unpleasant as the second film it does have a great deal going for it.
