The field of genetics has changed considerably since the first edition of Genetics for Cat Breeders was published in 1971. For decades the discussion of genetics was limited to observations of populations but now geneticists are beginning to look at the actual molecular mechanisms behind the traits and diseases seen in the cat.
Continuing the pioneering work of the late Roy Robinson, Carolyn Vella and her team of experts have significantly expanded the scope of previous editions to produce a work which is now of equal benefit to both veterinary surgeons and cat breeders. Their aim has been to make the book more accessible and understandable whilst providing an impartial look at sometimes controversial and complex issues.
The book retains the most important information published in previous editions and also incorporates some of the continuing work done by Roy Robinson prior to his death. A considerable amount of new information has been added in order to provide both breeders and veterinarians with the broadest possible range of information. The authors have not only reviewed the traditional sources of scientific literature and recently published studies, but have also conducted interviews with veterinarians, researchers and breeders.

"If for three decades the late Roy Robinson s Genetics for Cat Breeders has been the cat breeder s Bible, this new book must be the American Revised Version....[The authors] have successfully preserved, continued and expanded on Roy Robinson s pioneering work... Not only does it continue Robinson s work, it actually makes the best guide to feline genetics better!"C.F.A. s The Almanac

I found this book both fascinating and rewarding to read. I am no scientist - but wanted to breed better cats - and needed to understand how genetics worked. This book gave me a great start. It explains cat genetics in a 'gentle' way - taking you through step by step - so by the end of the book you feel like an expert. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to breed cats, especially if they want to understand all the complexities of coat types and colour.
Although not the easiest text to get through, this seems to be one of the only decent books for cat genetics. You will need to re-read it several times for all of the complex information to sink in. I wish there were more books available like this and the price is somewhat exorbitant, but an excellent reference for breeders or those with an interest nonetheless.
This is quite a comprehensive book about cat genetics, and has a lot of facts and information, which makes it invaluable. However it is a very dry read and although the book seems to be the only one of it's kind, it would have been better if more diagrams were used especially when describing mitosis and meiosis.
Colour photographs may also have broken up the heavy going chapters and given the reader a little light respite whilst learning about this heavy going topic. I would still recommend it as something every breeder should read at least once.
