Product Description

Product Description

This is a brand new addition to "Usborne Young Reading Series 2", which is aimed at children whose reading ability is beginning to grow, and helps build confidence and ability. Robin Hood, along with his band of Merry Men, robs from the rich to give to the poor. But when the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham threatens the throne of King Richard, can Robin save the kingdom and win the heart of the fair Maid Marian? It is evocatively illustrated by Alan Marks, who also illustrated the "Young Reading" titles "Moonfleet" and "The Railway Children". It is developed in consultation with Alison Kelly, who is a senior lecturer in education and an early reading specialist from Roehampton University.

This particular book is from SERIES TWO.

Together they plan a daring raid on the Sheriff's castle......'

Durable board covers open to 64 high quality shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread format, split into 8 chapters:-

Much Middleton
On the run
Sherwood Forest
Robin and Much
The Sheriff's castle
The Swordsmen strike
To the castle
Fight!

Numbered pages.
Beautifully illustrated in vivid colours throughout, this book is further enhanced by meaningful facial expressions and some speech bubbles.
Complete with royal blue ribbon bookmark.
Clear, easy-to-follow-text.

Example of text:-

'It was a sunny day in Sherwood village. Ten-year old Much Middleton was helping his father in their mill. As he lifted a sack of corn, he heard shouting.
Dozens of soldiers pounded into the village on horseback, led by the Sheriff of Nottingham.
"I need more money," the Sheriff declared.
He owned Sherwood and the villagers had to pay him taxes so they could live there.
Much's father was furious. "Only the King is allowed to raise taxes," he protested.
The Sheriff sneered. "The King is overseas. I'm in charge now."
With that, he lashed his horse and charged back to the castle.....'

As Much and his father reflect over the counting of their insufficient money that evening.........things are set to take a turn for the better...... in the shape of Robin Hood.

The Robin Hood story is fantastic. I love the book because it's so fun. Its very action packed. It makes me so happy like I'm already inside the story - its fun, crazy, mad and action packed. The story may be gruesome but also super fun. This whopping smashing story is so cool you'll want to be in the story yourself. I would give this story five stars because it is so cool. I would like to tell you about my favourite part when Jack tripped the Sheriff into the dungeon. The story begins in the village near Sherwood Forest when Jack threw horse dung into the Sheriff's face. But actually I would give the story 11 out of 10.

Have bought a selection of these books for my 7 year old son, who although a reasonably capable reader finds books without pictures and too much writing uninspiring. Having thoroughly enjoyed The Railway Children and Oliver Twist in the same series he found Robin Hood rather dull and it didn't grab him in the same way at all. The text was unexciting and the story was retold in a very banal way which did not spark off his imagination as I had hoped. Probably not one of the best in this series.
