I liked my DAB radio, which gave me a few interesting stations to listen to. However, you can get these and thousands more on the internet but now and again, it would be nice to receive these services on what looks like a normal radio.

The Roberts Stream 106X provides the perfect solution and simply does its job without fuss. It was easily configurable (despite having to enter my lengthy WPA key!) and within minutes I had configured a few preset options with my favourite radio stations (including those more associated with 'normal' radio - e.g. Radio Five Live). Despite there being many thousands of stations to choose from, I have it almost permanently tuned in to the excellent prog rock station Stellar Attraction. The lack of DAB and FM is irrelevant as such stations can be listened to over the internet anyway.

I also tested it for streaming music from my desktop computer using UPnP (in my case Twonky) and before long I was listening to playlists that I had previously created on my PC. The options for listening by Artist, album etc. seem endless.

The quality is quite reasonable and what you would expect for any radio of this size. The sound is clear, crisp and does not distort. I am using rechargeable batteries (6 x size C) most of the time but a suitable mains plug is provided. The LCD display is more than adequate with all the information you need appearing on the screen. Listening to Stellar Attraction, information regarding artist and track title is all there and, prog rock being what it is, lengthy titles (to go with the lengthy music!) are 'wrapped' within the display. However, most of the time it all fits in without wrapping.

The book of instruction is excellent - and needs to be. This radio is not for the faint-hearted. It needs a good signal from WiFi or from some reliable and steady internet source. Our signal is via a router and 'extender' plugged into the mains. It works very well. The radio has Roberts' usual excellent sound quality. It's good to look at, a sensible size for beside the bed or carried about the house (as long as you still have signal). What you can do with this piece of equipment is remarkable - choose a radio station almost anywhere in the world and in no time you can listen to it. The radio will wake you up, switch off when you go to sleep and tune in automatically to the last programme you selected. We have bought two 106X radios now and are very pleased with them. Where we live, it is not easy to tune in to one's 'home stations' except via Satellite dish - or via the computer. This radio is becoming very popular amongst ex-patriates in this part of France.

We bought this because our old Magibox Imp wouldn't work with our new WPA2 router. It was up and running within minutes and we are delighted with the sound quality and how easy it is to use. Unlike the Magibox, which took about 20 minutes to reboot, you can move it from room to room and it finds the signal in about 30 seconds. I also love the fact that it tells you the track name when you listen to music!

NB We are only using the internet radio function, so I can't comment on its other functions.

I found it quite complicated to set up and had to persist over several days and made one call to the helpline about the preset technique relating to 'locking' then in position. The sound quality is very good.

The radio is ideal for this area of Devon, as there is no reception for digital radios, and I want to listen to programmes broadcast on Radio 4 Extra. I'm sure it will prove useful for other stations and functions, once I get used to using it.

It also has better reception than our analogue radio, which has to be placed in ever differing positions in order to get a static - free signal.
