5.0 out of 5 stars This is reallly a super radio 20 Mar 2006
I have had this radio for several months now and I think the other reviewer is overlooking what a super piece of equipment it is. The battery life far exceeds 1 hour- I left the radio on all night with lots to spare- I would estimate battery life at more like 12 hours +. Yes it takes D batteries which are expensive and heavy, but let's face it this thing is designed for the home (homes I have been in tend to have multiple plug sockets for the AC lead). You are not going to take this radio to Antarctica with you, and if you do want to use it in the garden you will get more than sufficient battery life. I would list the radio's good points as follows:
- excellent sound from two large speakers with full volume,
treble and bass adjustment- you could be in the recording
- FM option (I never use this but some stations don't broadcast
on DAB)
- Pause Plus feature is really brilliant (rewinds or pauses live
broadcasts and shows you the maximum delay possible). Just
remember you can't rewind to before you switched the radio on
- lovely big and clear LCD with all the usual info
- 5 presets (you don't really need this as scrolling is so easy)
- you can choose whether you just scroll to select or press
the 'select' button too - handy
Any bad points? Nothing major. Yes it's a bit heavy and takes big batteries, but my smaller Roberts just doesn't have the depth of sound. Maybe they could have added an SD card record function to make it perfect. This is just quibbling- record off the internet or an FM cassette recorder if you must! DAB technology has saved my life- no more rubbish crackle and interference. Buy this and you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DAB with PausePlus 30 Mar 2006
I've had this radio for some months now and listen to it every day at work for up to 8.5 hours (plus weekends). The excellent build quality, crystal clear reception and good sound quality make it a real pleasure to listen to - no more interferance or static, and great for everything from Radio 4 to Planet Rock.
The PausePlus feature is just right for those occasions when the phone rings and you don't want to miss a quiz or favorite tune!
I've had no problems with battery life - still on the 1st set and have used it in excess of 15 hrs unplugged so far.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best DAB radio on the market 29 Oct 2006
Sometimes it is worth spending a bit extra and getting the best. This is the case with the Roberts DAB RD-27. The sound quality is excellent...you will be amazed how the sound from this radio fills the room. The digital reception is perfect (not the case with all DAB radios!) The build is retro-stylish, solid and easy to use.

And even without the biggest distinguishing feature (PausePlus) this radio is still worth getting over other DAB radios because of the exceptional sound quality. So with the ability to also easily pause and rewind digital radio, this radio is even more than you could wish for. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - and battery life is OK 8 Dec 2007
Others have spoken of the sound quality - it really is good. One reviewer was critical of the battery life when using rechargeables. He probably was not aware that the standard D-size rechargeable batteries that you can buy in the shops typically have a capacity of between 2,000 and 2,800mAh, whereas typical alkaline cells (even own-brand types from supermarkets) generally have a capacity of 15,000 to 18,000 mAh (i.e. around 8 times as much). Coupled with the lower voltage of rechargeables it is not surprising that they did not last long. However, it is hardly the fault of the radio given the poor capacity of that type of battery. How do I know this - I am an electronic engineer with around 30 years experience.

Buy the radio and enjoy the sound. You won't regret it.
