5.0 out of 5 stars If it's good enough for the queen..., 24 Mar 2004
This review is from: Roberts RD4 Gemini Sports Portable DAB Digital Radio (Electronics)
This little portable DAB doesn't look like anything else on the market, which is what drew me to it in the first place. It's an odd hybrid of slight retro styling (which you'd expect from Roberts) with a real high-tech face. The screen is backlit orange which looks fantastic. And the sound is exceptional. I tested a few of the portables out (as these things aren't cheap you know) and this has got the purest, walmest sound. There's a few different sound settings so you can set it up to your own taste. I'm lucky enough to live in an area with very good DAB coverage and the sound on this is crystal clear. Even travelling on the train the reception doesn't deteriorate too much as in most areas I find I can get some DAB signal. The controls took a bit of getting used to using a receded joystick to scroll through stations and settings; but it soon becomes second nature and preferable to hitting or holding buttons all the time. If you want a DAB (and you know you do) that's high quality and doesn't look like another piece of plastic and faux chrome gadgetry you can't go wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars if it's good enough for the queen..., 30 Mar 2004
This review is from: Roberts RD4 Gemini Sports Portable DAB Digital Radio (Electronics)
Robert's are something of an anachronism, a British(ish) company still holding on to it's 40's heritage and "purveyors to HRH" title while trying to compete with Sony etc in the high tech consumables market. This portable DAB is unmistakeably a Roberts - you can tell by the fact it looks a bit like a leatherbound hip flask. But, with its nifty little joystick controls and a beautiful orange backlight screen it does look good. It looks like something more than a piece of silver plastic and faux chrome gadgetry that some of the other DABs resemble. The sound is warm and clear (but I do live in an area with excellent DAB reception) and technically the RD4 is better than other portables I tested out (Perstel, Pure etc). The various sound settings available are perfect to accommodate both the talk/sport and music stations, and the sound is big enough to get across the atmosphere on the sports commentaries.
