I wanted another DAB set with alarm/sleep functions in addition to decent quality adjustable audio output, and settled on this as the most likely to provide that without going to the high end PURE sets, which seem to have a mixed reliability record among buyers.

I already have a Gemini 21 so knew what these roberts sets sound like - this was a big factor in my choice. This set is far better value in terms of provided spec. than the Gemini.

I'll get the negatives out of the way first...

1 - without batteries, the radio is a bit top heavy and tips over too easily for my liking. Fitting a set of alkalines fixes this.
2 - settings for alarm etc are deeply nested in the menu system, only settable with multiple button presses.
3 - the scrolling marquee with programme info moves very slowly; it's painful to read it.
4 - I don't like how the carry handle can't swivel down the front of the radio.
5 - not keen on the two chromed-plastic main control discs. The chrome is slippery to touch; normal upstand knobs would have been better, or get rid of the chrome.
6 - once tuned to all available DAB signals it's not possible to edit out unwanted stations, which you might want to do if you've used the set in another part of the country where other stations are broadcast. To refresh the station list it needs a full reset, only available via the menu system, with a retune. This won't bother users who take the radio away on holiday.

And that's it for -ives really. Listening to the set is a real pleasure, and the above moans aren't too hard to live with; although comment #2 rankles a bit most times the settings need changed :)

FM performance is pretty good overall, if not quite as sensitive to weak signals as another FM/shortwave roberts set I have (R9914)

DAB performance is fine. This set doesn't seem to be upgradeable to DAB2, whenever that may materialise, but that's probably so far ahead that it's not a realistic shortcoming. Some speech stations sound less good but that's not the fault of the radio - it's governed by broadcast bitrate.

I had a technical query and emailed the Roberts helpdesk - the response was quick and gave good accurate information.

Overall this is a nice radio, and although I wasn't aware of the points above listed at the time of purchase I still think it was a good buy, and don't have a problem in recommending it to you.

I bought this radio because of past experience with Roberts radios. My first was bought in 1978 and is now with my eldest daughter. Used everyday and still performs. My second is a DAB RD78. I have this one in the bedroom. The Ecologic I bought because it can be used free of mains electricity. I can take it in the garden, bathroom wherever. The treble/bass control is a nice feature. I mostly listen to "voice" radio so can adjust 'til the audio has a natural sound. It comes into it's own with music stations. Beautiful deep bass. Roberts has a reputation for a rich sound and this has been my experience with all three radios. Used with headphones it will amaze you.
I also like the fact that you can preset 10 stations. Six never seems enough somehow. Contrary to a previous contributor I like the volume/tuning "disks". Keeps the top of the radio flush. You don't have to worry about knocking the controls. Great also if you cant grip. It just needs the slightest touch with one finger.
When choosing DAB radios it's between Pure and Roberts. After listening to several models of both brands I find Pure has the more clinical sound, Roberts has the warmer, easier to listen to sound. Whilst doing my research pre-sale I also found that Pure seems to have more problems.
The Roberts has lived up to my expectations. It's ticked all the boxes and I'm very pleased with my purchase.
Would I buy another. Absolutely.
