The Music of Jeremy Dale Roberts 7 Nov 2009
By R. L. Harris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The composer Jeremy Dale Roberts is 75 this year. That places him as an exact contemporary of Sir
Peter Maxwell Davies, Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Anthony Gilbert.
Like Gilbert, Dale Roberts has been both a composer and a distinguished teacher - at the Royal College of Music in London, rather than Manchester.

What is his music like? Well - highly individual, very focused and immaculately crafted, with lots of
space around the ideas. Also, slightly quirky and unexpected in the best sense of those words. Webern comes to mind, perhaps, but without the perceived austerity of that composer.

This CD includes a large cycle of piano miniatures, "Oggetti -Ommagio a Morandi", excerpts from his
"Croquis" for string trio (also available on NMC), spectral and fantastic, by turns and "Layers" for flute,
oboe, clarinet and trumpet. My own personal favourite is the opening track, "Winter Music" , scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, celeste and bells. Glacial, yet beautifully placed sounds and resonance. I was recommended this album by one of Jeremy's pupils, the composer Richard Causton
and likewise wholeheartedly recommend this composer's music to all those who possess open ears!
