For this viewer, this is F&G's best movie!

Let's face it, most of the others are basically subject to the same silly misunderstandings to inspire/delay the glorious music and dance. Roberta (1935) has the best story but also the best music, with superb singing from Irene Dunne to match the superb dancing from F&G, and is altogether more visually striking than in the other films with their absurdly opulent hotels and resorts. The romance between Irene Dunne and Randolph Scott is also more passionate than the one given to Scott in Follow The Fleet.

No no, ignore the naysayers. ROBERTA is the best introduction to the artistry of Fred & Ginger.

Buy it and be transported.

4.0 out of 5 stars They don't make them like this any more! 9 Aug 2009

This is a superb, stunning and highly entertaining movie; the music, dancing and clothes all from an age of high style - in every sense. A film well worth owning, because you will want to watch it again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Supreme dancing 11 April 2009
This film should be regarded not for its overall quality as a film musical, but as an essential part of the collection of any Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers lover. (It was made before the studio fully realised that they would be a much bigger attraction than Irene Dunne.) It contains two of their best ever dances: their first 'fun' dance, which is recorded live and in a single take, and a sublime slow romantic dance to 'Smoke gets in your eyes'. There is also an amazing virtuoso solo tap dance from Fred. It is well worth enduring the mediocre plot-line for these items alone. Jerome Kern's music is also a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars ROBERTA 28 Nov 2011
Fred & Ginger are superb, story line a bit corny but I bought the DVD for the dancing. Irene Dunn singing smoke gets in your eyes is wonderfull.

3.0 out of 5 stars Roberta - the movie 13 Nov 2009
By Dr. H. A. Jones TOP 500 REVIEWER
Our heroine (played by Helen Westley) doesn't last long in this film, released in 1935. She seems to be on the point of expiring when the film opens and the rather far-fetched plot is all about what happens when her haute couture salon in Paris passes to her nephew (played by Randolph Scott), who is an all-American football star. Not the most convincing of plots - actually based on a book by Alice Duer Miller - but it served its purpose as a vehicle for a ravishing score by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Otto Harbach. The same story was remade rather more convincingly in colour by MGM in 1952 as Lovely To Look At. Astaire was partnered by Ginger Rogers in their third film together.

The songs soon became popular standards and, together with the Astaire-Rogers dancing, helped the film along. They included `Let's begin', `I'll be hard to handle', `You're devastating,' `Lovely to look at', `Smoke gets in your eyes' (sung in the film by Irene Dunne), and `I won't dance', originally from a London-based show by Kern and Oscar Hammerstein but reworked here with new lyrics by Dorothy Fields. Randolph Scott, before his career in westerns, has a quite prominent role as a footballer friend of Astaire's.

The film is in black-and-white of course, given its age, but Astaire and Rogers look good together whether or not they are in colour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something is wrong here 29 Sep 2013
One of the weakest films of Fred and Ginger. It lacks some of the magic or the grace that is in the others. Maybe it's the fellow of Fred, perhaps it is that the Fred himself choreographed, maybe Irene Dunne should not be in the movie. I do not know. The truth is that Kern's music is good and very beautiful especially Smoke gets in your eyes or Lovely to look at. The models are beautiful and this and the dynamic of Fred and Ginger save the film. Has spanish subtitles.

Una de las películas mas débiles de Fred y Ginger. Le falta algo de la magia o la gracia que hay en las otras. Quizás sea el compañero, quizás sea que el propio hizo la coreografía, quizás es que Irenne Dunne no debió estar en la película. No sé. Lo cierto es que la música de Kern está bien y sobre todo la muy bella Smoke gets in your eyes o la Lovely to look at. Las modelos están bellísimas y esto y la dinámica Fred-Ginger salvan el filme. Tiene subtítulos en español.
