I bought this due to an interest in Smythson, and was hoping for a good insight into the life of the man. This book is very comprehensive on the buildings he was engaged with, but there was less content concerning the man himself (possibly due to the fact not much history survives on him). Very good book for those with an interest in Elizabethan country house architecture though, so I would recommend.

Excellent Biography 2 Sep 2014
By David Arbogast - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
In my opinion, Mark Girouard is one of the finest English architectural historians of his generation. His writng is lucid, communicating sometimes difficult information so that this reader was able to grasp it without difficulty. The book is beautifully composed, with excellent black-and-white photographs. This may well be the best biography of Robert Smythson available.
