Product Description

Product Description

The poet and author Robert Graves (1895-1985), now best known for his historical novels I, Claudius and Claudius the God, thanks to the legendary BBC TV adaptation, was recognised as one of the better Edwardian and First World War poets, although for a time his work was somewhat sidelined by the Modernists. Graves’s writings and life belong to a period where the values and beliefs of the past were rejected or no longer felt sustainable: his unconventional life, bizarre domination by a series of strong-willed women and search for poetic rejuvenation through a series of muses can be seen as a rejection of ‘Victorian values’, caused by his childhood experiences and his service in the First World War, where he was seriously wounded on the Somme. His autobiography Good-Bye to All That, published in 1929, is one of the landmark memoirs of the war in the trenches on the Western Front. By the time of his death, Graves was internationally famous, seen as one of the 20th century’s best poets, and whose prose works were sold all over the world. This first single-volume biography over a decade will shed new light on this intriguing and unparalleled life.

Accurate? 1 Dec 2009
By Tony Heyes VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I was reading this book when I came upon a statement that Siegfried Sassoon's older brother, Hamo, was a sculptor. Hamo was his younger brother and was a structural engineer. Hamo Thorneycroft, the brother of Siegfried's mother, was a sculptor. This one sentence, containing two mistakes, left me wondering how accurate the rest of the book was and left me wondering if there was any point in reading further. Obviously the book had been written quickly and without serious verification.

A huge disappointment 29 Nov 2009
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book in repsonse to the publisher's hype but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. It's a surprisingly short book given its subject. But what is of real concern is the irritating, episodic approach which fails to get to grips with its subject. Most bizarrely, there are no photographs. I'm still waiting for the definitive biography!

Disappointing 29 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
First of all the book production is appalling - although the book is nicely bound, the paper is greyish with faint speckles and the text looks like a second-generation photocopy. I was not much impressed with the content either. The whole book reads like a summary or drastically cut-down version of a much larger biography. The style is jerky and abrupt, and the tone harsh and too often judgemental (not only about Graves but also other people). I have read Robert Graves and books about him avidly since I was a teenager (1964) but learned virtually nothing new from this book. Perhaps it could be of use to someone as a quick introduction to the poet's life and work.
