Doisneaus work immortalized the magic of Paris for posterity; this stunning compact edition, edited by the artists daughters, includes over six hundred photographs. Doisneau is celebrated for his ability to infuse images of daily life with poetic nuances that have brought enduring popular appeal to his photojournalism. This collection pairs aesthetically-composed photographs alongside snapshots that offer a more personal account of Doisneaus Paris. Organized thematically, this bookunprecedented in scopegives an entrancing tour through the gardens of Paris, along the Seine, and amid the crowds of Parisians who live in and define their magical city. An enchanting cross-section of Parisian life by one of the photographers who best captured its many charms. The New York Times, 2005

I saw this book late last year (2010) while browsing in a local bookshop. I've been to Paris twice, and France 3 times in the past twenty years. This book to me sums up so much of Paris of the early 30's to 70's and is also striking to me (68 years old and counting) when I recall the fashions of the 40's and 50's.
There are pub scenes, street scenes, scenes of apparent impoverishment and scenes of the Nazi occupation.
I recommend this book for its peek at a world suffering the great depression and other calamities, plus the times of recovery.

I purchased this book for my daughters birthday, although quite young by my standards, she loves the atmosphere of the black and white photographs, and she told my wife it's one of the best presents she has had she has taken it almost every where to show different people, who in the main have been impressed with the pictures contain within. So in all great book, and very good value for the money.
