Byron, from most of what I have read, was a somewhat difficult individual, but none can claim him to have any failings as a writer- 'The Road to Oxiana' alone attests to his brilliance and passion for his area of expertise. These letters, edited by his sister, give further insight into the sadly curtailed life of this interesting, often-overlooked, figure from the twentieth century. As another reviewer wrote, Knox's biography is an excellent companion to this volume: the two combine to give as full a portrait of his fascinating life and times as is possible.
