'A page-turner; the most gripping showbiz biography I have read in ages' --Mail on Sunday

Product Description

Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow - together and apart, these two men have dominated the charts for the best part of twenty years. And it is their fractured 'bromance' that has shaped the history of one of the world's most successful bands. Based on years of in-depth research, this authoritative biography uncovers the truth about their tortured relationship. It reveals why sixteen-year-old Robbie idolised the older and more talented Gary when, as unknowns, they were put together in the newly formed Take That. We see how the stresses brought on by fame and money destroyed their fragile friendship and resulted in Robbie trying to take Gary's position as front man. We also discover how far they'd go to hurt each other during a feud that lasted fifteen years and continued to shape their solo careers. Explaining why the two men finally reconciled in 2010, and analysing how their reunion is coping with the stresses of touring once more, Robbie and Gary offers a unique insight into the lives of these much loved stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoying it .... 8 Sep 2011
I was given this book recently as a gift and I am thoroughly enjoying reading it. As more of a fan of Gary than Robbie, it is fascinating to read what exactly was behind their years of feuding and I'm looking forward to reading why Robbie really rejoined Take That. This book is must read for any Gary/Take That or Robbie fan. Infact I have just ordered two copies as gifts for friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read... 17 Oct 2011
Not a bad book at fact I was quietly impressed considering its an "unauthorised/unnofficial" book with no endorsement from the subjects/band. I have been a MASSIVE fan since age 12 and have follwed all 5 members throughout the 90's right up to now, both as a group, solo artists and their other works....

At first I must confess I was a little sceptical as to what it would actually tell me that: a) wasn't already well known and publicised, b) already discussed in their own writings (ie Gary's My Take, Rob's autobiographies and interviews etc) or C even true and correct. I have read so many books that do not list correct details about Take That and everyone wants to make money off their sucess....this however was a pretty good read. Not 100% accurate about some of the facts but near enough in the majority. There is a lot of information that can be sourced from either artists biography and its a nice way of tallying it all together in one book rather than two seperate accounts.....all in all pretty spot on and I was impressed!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's interesting 28 Sep 2011
I was just given this book as a gift. I knew nothing about either Robbie or Gary except that Robbie came from my home town. I was in the middle of a thriller and rarely read biographies but can't resist a new book. I just wanted to read a couple of chapters of my new book to get the flavour but got hooked and abandoned my thriller. I liked the way the author paralleled the ups and downs of each artist.
I was half way through my book when I found my husband reading it. He was out of books, had picked up mine just to browse and had also got hooked. On the grounds that I had another book to finish, he claimed it and I'm now looking forward to getting it back to learn more about these two flawed and complex characters. It must be a good read to hook both of us!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gary & Robbie - it sure is complicated 27 Sep 2011
By Bren
I am half way through this book and thoroughly enjoying it. Having liked the band since they came back as a four piece with 'Patience' - anything before that I was oblivious to. Reading this helps me catch up - I never realised that both Gary and Robbie had issues and not just with each other. The book is well written and a must for any Take That fan. Non-fans might find it a bit interesting too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Removing the layers ... 6 Nov 2011
By Shazjera TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Paul Scott structures his story of Robbie & Gary. He doesn't offer personal opinions, he does quote from previous autobiographies and refers to some sources as `friends say'.

He begins with a brief history of Take That's formation and the group dynamics that were fostered by their manager, Nigel Martin-Smith.

We follow them separately - the race to get their first solo singles out, Gary's relationship with Dawn Andrews and his emotional decline, Robbie's experience in the American market and his emotional decline, the rise of Robbie, the fall of Gary and then the fall of Robbie (yes, he really was falling at one point even though I don't remember much about that in the media) and the rise of Gary! We do get to see the psychology behind the men.

All the layers are removed leaving bare foibles, emotional wounds and the true feelings of these very popular celebrities. I thought the author told their story with compassion and honesty with the last two paragraphs summing up their `new' friendship really well.

Of course I loved looking at the photographs ... did they really look that young! and I also liked the chapter titles which were all themed from Take That.

I have to admit personally that I love their `bromance' ! and once you read the book, you'll understand why they never concretised Robbie's return to Take That.

I knew I would enjoy reading this book having followed Take That when they first formed but I have to say I also enjoyed the way it was written. However, fans may not like seeing Robbie and Gary portrayed in such a harsh light. Despite seeing them with their masks off, I still think this book will be gracing many bookshelves.
