Rob Jones lived the dream. He was good enough to play football for the club he had supported as a boy. He played for his country too during a meteoric rise to the top of the English game. But his dream turned into a nightmare as persistent injuries forced him to call time on his professional career long before his 30th birthday. Sports journalist Paul Hassall's excellent book tells the story of a young man who achieved much but could with a little more good fortune have achieved so much more; and how that young man refused to allow the disappointment and despair of having his professional football career cut short destroy him as he embarked on a new path that would see him emerge as a successful businessman in a completely different field.

There are glowing tributes from some of the men whose influence and advice paved the way for Robert Marc Jones to become a professional footballer. But it is also abundantly clear throughout this book how important family was (and still is) to Jones. One man fits easily into both categories : Rob's grandfather Bill, a man who won a League championship winners' medal with Liverpool Football Club in 1947 and who was also a member of the first Liverpool team to compete in a Wembley cup final three years later. Even though Bill spoke very little about his Liverpool career, it is obvious that Rob had enormous affection for his grandfather : "I always enjoyed my grandad's company. There was just something about his presence that felt magical." That magic ensured that young Robert would grow up to be a Liverpool supporter too. Even during his days as a fledgling professional at Crewe, Rob still travelled to attend home matches at Anfield as often as time and other commitments permitted.

Dario Gradi ... "He lives and breathes football", says Rob ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining LFC book 22 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I often wondered what happened to Rob Jones. Very talented, he seemed to disappear after injuries ruined his LFC career in the mid-90s. 'Robbed' gives a complete insight to what it was like to rise from division 4 to England international and then have it all taken away too soon. I'd imagine some footballers would be quite bitter or angry if their career had ended in such a way. Jones clearly isn't. Some of the best stories in the book involve his antics in Madrid where he spent a lot of time with Steve McManaman. The fact that his post-playing life hasn't followed the usual coach/pundit path also gives the book another angle. I'll be buying a few copies as Xmas presents for the LFC supporters in my family.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable and funny read 19 Dec 2012
By Matt L.
Format:Kindle Edition
I grew up in the nineties and played full back as a child - Rob Jones was my role model. So I really enjoyed this book as it brought back many childhood memories.

The book is well put together and the comments from previous teammates and opponents add another interest to a biography. The foreword from Robbie Fowler alone is worth purchasing for! As you can expect, very funny stuff from Robbie and some of the stories of the Liverpool side of the 90's are superb.

Well worth a read. YNWA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read 4 Aug 2013

Took this book on holiday and could not put it down . Would have been one of the best attacking defenders of all time if injury did not cut his playing days short . Done well since after a bad early retirement

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 26 Dec 2012
Also bought a few of these for stocking fillers for LFC supporters. They all enjoyed the book and commented on the amount of big stars who have contributed to it. Full of detail and facts about Rob Jones, written with true insight and a wry smile this book is must for all Liverpool supporters and football enthusiasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for LFC fans 22 Dec 2012
By Kay G
I'm not a massive fan of football but found this book really entertaining. It has an interesting mix of 2 forewords from 2 huge stars from the 1990s in Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman.
It has a really atmospheric opening and flows well throughout.
The additional interviews with people like Ryan Giggs and Jamie Carragher at the end of the book are a great idea and show how highly regarded Rob Jones was by his teammates and opponents.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good easy reading
A good easy read - perfect for a short break by the beach. Interesting if you remember football in the mid-90s. Not really a warts-and-all read if that's what you're looking for
