Product Description

Product Description

Rob Roy MacGregor was mytholigised by Sir Walter Scott but was very much a fact in the Trossachs of Scotland in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Scott's romantic image is, however, far from the rogue which Nigel Tranter portrays in this classic work. MacGregor was an arch blackmailer, protection-racketeer and thorn in the flesh of the Hanoverian Government and their right hand men, the Campbells. This factual narrative firmly debunks the legend of Rob Roy as a romantic, Scottish folk hero and reveals the true nature of one of Scotland's most charismatic historical figures.

About the Author

Prior to his death in 2000, Nigel Tranter was one of Scotland's most famous and prolific authors with over 100 titles written. He specialised in Scottish historical fiction.

Rob Roy MacGregor 31 July 2011

This discussion of Rob Roy MacGregor by Nigel Tranter is excellent not only for his story-telling of the most famous, or some folk think it is infamous MacGregor, but also for the history given and the insight. Tranter is a great Scottish historian and a good novelist. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

I have read Sir Walter Scot's novel, Rob Roy, and enjoyed it also, but Tranter is far more accurate in his historic portrayal and insight, as I have said. I've read other books by Nigel Tranter and he is a very excellent writer. His writings were recommended to me by a member of Clan Gregor Society.

I don't think I am related to the Dougal Ciar Branch of Clan Gregor (Rob Roy's). With an "A" list sept name in my family of Gregg and by word of mouth the old name was McGregor, it is a good bet that I am a MacGregor, also. The proscription of the clan name caused a lot of confusion and name changing. Even Rob Roy took his mother's clan name of Campbell. I can trace family history back to the Ulster Plantations, Fermanagh, Ireland in the late 1600's and early 1700's. Anyone reading this book will learn quite a bit of Scottish history.

Thanks,

Tigertail
