Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If Roast Beef of Old England isn't enough to spawn a dose of contact scurvy, many other of these two dozen salty tunes will set the boat a-rocking. Treasures like "A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War" and "Drops of Brandy" detail life among British seamen of the early 1800s without dredging up too much of the usual pirates, shipwrecks or mutiny. It is a historical document of the regular life at sea, after all, inspired by the British Navy novels of Patrick O'Brian, with intentions to anchor the writing in the ordinary sounds and stories of those fictionalised sea-faring times. Glad fiddle, fife, and Jerry Bryant's humble six-man choral crew Starboard Mess spill the beans in suitable fashion without a sailor's colourful vocabulary. They supply the "yo ho ho" and annotations, you bring the rum and black powder. --Ian Christe

5.0 out of 5 stars The Voice of Jack Echoes Still, 16 April 2003
By A Customer
"It seems like ages since we had any music, Stephen."
"I am afraid I cannot play the cello tonight, Jack - that mumping villain Awkward Davies dropped a carboy of laudanum onto it in the sick berth. I do have something that might supply the deficiency, however. Killick, there, light along the apparatus!"
A pinched face appeared at the cabin door: "Which I'm a-doin' of it, ain't I?"
"What is it, Stephen?"
"My correspondent in the Japans has sent me this recently invented music-playing automaton. One inserts the disc here - and so..."
Jack was entranced as the succession of well-known songs described life before the mast for new recruits and recounted battles he had heard about and in some cases fought in.
He sang along lustily in honour of his cousin Phillip Broke who took the Chesapeake. He beat the time enthusiastically to the fiddle tunes such as Chevy Chase. He gave a wry grin when one song reminded him how the peace of Amiens had cast them ashore: "Said the admiral 'There's very bad news..."

"But this is remarkable, Stephen. How can so many glorious songs and stirring melodies be contained on a little silver disc?"

"I cannot pretend to fathom the mysteries of this device, Jack. But I will undertake to say that I have rarely enjoyed any concert so much as this one."

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart of Oak were our men, 30 Oct 2004
This CD is ten times better than going to a museum! The songs are genuine slices of history, and we're so lucky to still have them. Both documentary and entertaining, they teach you about the human side of that life; the joys and the sorrows of the sailor, from singing on the fo'c'sle to wishing they were at home with their families.
Also, if like me you love Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin books, these songs only help to bring them even more to life. Excellent!
