Now this is the sort of music that made the Upsetter rightly famous. Smokin dub music at it's finest from Scratch at his creative peak circa 1976 -77. Most of the tracks on this are dub plate mixes of popular riddims at that time, dubbed up and phased echoings swirl around as disembodied vocals float in and out of the mix. The amps and the audience should be smoking when this is playing, the bass bins heaving and shuddering with thunderous bass lines, the tweeters shrieking and wailing as the tortured horns try to escape the echo chamber only to be turned inside out and fed back in.. Truly the work of genius. If you like your dub dirty then this is for you. Probably the best collection of mostly previously unreleased Upsetter music that I've bought for many a year. I strongly recommend this CD to all lovers of real dub music. If you miss it you'll be sorry! This disc will be changing hands for ridiculous amounts of money in a few years time, having gained legendary status amongst those of us who recognise Lee Scratch Perry as the Boss Dub Master.

This is a top-notch selection of dub-plates and versions from Perry's genius period in his Black Ark. Everything is full of killer hooks, great dub echoes, reverbs, and other sonic delights.

If you are mad for LSP then buy this; it's a treat that will keep on giving.

p.s. This is a review of the vinyl, which is nicely pressed and sounds good, a couple of rare tracks aside (prob from vinyl copies rather than the masters). I haven't heard the CD, but the limitations of the format mean that it can't come close to the vinyl version. Please buy Lee on vinyl if you can; the CD can only sound dull and thin comparison.

This album consists of different versions of tracks that have appeared on many other albums. Having said that most of the versions on this album are good and if you are a Lee Perry fan it is worth having.

Extreme dub 5 Dec. 2013
By Comment Man - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I placed this CD in my car stereo and listened to the first 25 seconds. Amazed at the strangeness, I immediately hit the replay button--so, basically, I wound up hearing the beginning of the song four times instead of two. Lee Perry by 1976 had hit full stride at Black Ark studios, producing some of the strangest and most revolutionary music anyone in popular music ever has. These productions are mostly dubs and are mainly over the top strange. An Althea and Donna song is completely upended with radical sonic noise. While a number of dub plate mixes are included, these are from tape, not from the dub plate and the recording quality is excellent.

A special treat for Bob Marley fans is the original edition of Natural Mystic. This original version has not been released until now. Lee Perry released a different mix of this same session which was sweetened with harmonies by the Meditations. The linear notes to this release also claim that version was mastered at the wrong speed and "used a flat studio take." This version of Natural Mystic is superior to both that version and the version Bob Marley released on Exodus - 30th Anniversary. An avid Bob Marley fan would do well to download this track if he didn't want the whole CD.

Augustus Pablo is featured on Roaring Lion/Pride (the dub of Roaring Lion). The basic sound is closer to Vibrate on than anything Augustus Pablo released on his own--listening to the track, I understand better what Perry meant when he said "I made an album with him (Augustus Pablo). I thought it was going to be a hit vibration all around the world. It was a beautiful world but it wasn't my world. ..I didn't finish and I threw out the tapes." It is a strange and unnerving track

Stand and Look by the Fantels is the only other normal vocal track. The remainder of the CD is amazing and revolutionary dub--work which is so radical and unprecedented that to this day is sounds fresh and original. There is no substitution for the real thing. And this is the real thing totally original and groundbreaking.

Lee Perry the dubmaster's work at the strangest and most radical is completely irreplaceable.

I have amused myself mentioning my wife's opinion of Lee Perry's work in these reviews. She says she wants Amazonland to know she is just grateful Lee Perry did not start singing the ABC song in this one (the way he did in Return of Pipecock Jackxon.) Maybe her standard for outrage is falling.....

A slew of previously unreleased Lee Perry and Upsetters tracks from Black Ark circa 1975. These dubs and versions are new to me and I have been listening to this stuff for about 40 years. Just great.

Perry Still Rocks 6 Jan. 2014

Lee Perry was a pioneer and a visionary of the dub style of Jamaican music. Many of us rocked in dimly lit clubs to this hypnotic pulsating rhythms of the late 60's and 70's. Perry was a little known musical genius whose angry outbursts
elevated his creativity to another level
unequaled by his rivals. He was devoted
to the truth in the form that he was trying
To express.
