Product Description

The 1920s and the 1930s were widely known as the "Roaring 20th" or "Crazy 30th". When you put on the records of this time, you can easily guess why! The music on this beautiful collection was not only interesting for the old generation – these titles still have a style that doesn´t go out of date.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ASTONISHING BARGAIN, DESPITE THE FLAWS 11 May 2012
By Barry McCanna TOP 100 REVIEWER
Verified Purchase
When this first came up on my radar I ordered a copy, and posted the link on two Yahoo groups, which are devoted to British and American dance bands respectively. As you can imagine, the members are pretty well clued up, as a result of which I heard there'd been such a rush of orders that the distributors were having to restock. Nevertheless, I'd be falling short as a reviewer if I didn't note a couple of reservations, so let's get them out of the way first.

As is not uncommon with Membran 10-CD boxed sets, the tracklist is minimal. That would be tolerable were it accurate, but sadly it is peppered with factual errors. For example, two titles show a different tune from that on the CD, one track is featured twice on different CDs, several tracks date from the 40s, and details of vocalists and composers are not always accurate.

Despite those caveats this is a real bargain, best described as a random set of recordings by British and American dance bands, peppered with a quite high proportion of outright jazz numbers, several of which are extremely rare. My advice is to snap it up whilst it's available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb value! 20 Feb 2013

I bought this just because it looked like a good deal and for once it was! There are ten CDs with 200 tracks in total, the sound quality is very good considering the age of the original recordings. There is a wide range of music from the 20's and 30's and if you like the sounds from that period, then this set is a very worthy addition to any collection. It must be good because I have listened to it constantly since I received it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is about the music, people 28 Sep 2013

It is not often that I could praise quantity, quality and cost altogether when buying a cd boxset, but with this product I can. For the price, the quantity and quality of these '20s, '30s and '40s' recordings will take some beating.

Previous reviewers have pointed out some inaccuracies such as incorrect tracklisting, and the fact that 9 of the recordings are from the early '40s when this is not advertised on the box. But surely you buy cds for the music and for the quality, and this 10 disc set dating from 9 decades ago is of remarkable and exceptional beauty. The audio quality is amazing on these records.

I am not an expert on the artists or the tracklistings, though most seem consistent with the recordings that I have listened too and followed on the cardboard sleeves. Incidentally, don't let the fact that the cds are packaged in cardboard sleeves instead of jewel cases put you off from purchasing this lovely tribute to music from a bygone era. Just use a little more care in how you store the set - away from damp areas - or for a small price buy inner sleeves or cases. I have chosen to keep them as I bought them - though for added security I have doubled a medium size rubber band over the box. Over many years I have collected several newspaper promotional DVDs and CDs of interest to me that have been kept in cardboard sleeves and they all still play perfectly well - you just need to be a bit more careful in how you treat them.

If you like music from the 1920s through to the early 1940s, then "Roaring 20s Crazy 30s" would be a lovely addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Value & Cheaper than Downloads 2 Jan 2013
By Spectre
I would give this 200 track, 10 Cd collection 5 stars, simply because of it's remarkable $ value alone.
Here are some downsides :
1. There is no booklet.
2. The thin cardboard indivdual covers have a tendency to scratch the CD's when being taken in & out & paper absorbs moisture which also has an effect on the CD surface, I use inner sleeves.
3. The Information supplied on the covers is sometimes horribly wrong, Titles, Composers, & Credits. This possibly does not worry many people, but is creating it's own history on web sites like Google. Better if you don't know to simply say "We Don't Know".
4 The choice of Orchestras has me a little baffled "Nat Gonella" for example has a lot of exposure, some others none at all?

Overall very good value & most enjoyable both translation quality & quantity wise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value and plenty of bands... 8 Nov 2012
These Membrane Documents sets always represent great value by sheer numbers of tracks and here you have 10 CDs and a mix of British and American bands in very acceptable sound quality. The track information is not detailed but that does not change the enjoyment of the music. Price wise a great bargain. Look out for many more multi CD sets across a wide range of musical tastes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mustn't grumble. 14 May 2012

Yes, we'd like exhaustive notes with recording dates, label details, locations and line-ups. Yes, this is a disorderly set in that mellow British dance band tunes mingle freely with comic numbers and wild American syncopation. At four pence per track I won't be complaining. These are excellent clean and crisp transfers. Yes, once upon a time Membran's Document box series came with reasonable booklets and clumpy crystal cases but you now have Google and YouTube to sort it out. This set tops even Membran's excellent 'Rhythm & Blues Original Masters' set. Happy as a sand buoy, could say.
