Product Description

CD Description

The 1920s and the 1930s were widely known as the "Roaring 20th" or "Crazy 30th". When you put on the records of this time, you can easily guess why! The music on this beautiful collection was not only interesting for the old generation – these titles still have a style that doesn´t go out of date.

When this first came up on my radar I ordered a copy, and posted the link on two Yahoo groups, which are devoted to British and American dance bands respectively. As you can imagine, the members are pretty well clued up, as a result of which I heard there'd been such a rush of orders that the distributors were having to restock. Nevertheless, I'd be falling short as a reviewer if I didn't note a couple of reservations, so let's get them out of the way first.

As is not uncommon with Membran 10-CD boxed sets, the tracklist is minimal. That would be tolerable were it accurate, but sadly it is peppered with factual errors. For example, two titles show a different tune from that on the CD, one track is featured twice on different CDs, several tracks date from the 40s, and details of vocalists and composers are not always accurate.

Despite those caveats this is a real bargain, best described as a random set of recordings by British and American dance bands, peppered with a quite high proportion of outright jazz numbers, several of which are extremely rare. My advice is to snap it up whilst it's available.

A collection of light popular dance music recordings from the '20s and '30s, recordings of the time, not "sounds-like" or rerecordings. It's guaranteed that many of your favorites will be here and that there will be a few songs you haven't heard or have forgotten. You'll be delighted to hear them again and you will pleased with the quality of the CDs. This is the tenth Membran/Documents 10CD collection I've gotten and not a disappointment or letdown yet. Thanks and keep on doin' it, Membran/Documents!

Mustn't grumble. 14 May 2012

Yes, we'd like exhaustive notes with recording dates, label details, locations and line-ups. Yes, this is a disorderly set in that mellow British dance band tunes mingle freely with comic numbers and wild American syncopation. At four pence per track I won't be complaining. These are excellent clean and crisp transfers. Yes, once upon a time Membran's Document box series came with reasonable booklets and clumpy crystal cases but you now have Google and YouTube to sort it out. This set tops even Membran's excellent 'Rhythm & Blues Original Masters' set. Happy as a sand buoy, could say.
