Book Description

7 Nov 1996 Penguin Cookery Library
This book is a mixture of anecdotes covering Roald Dahl's family, his childhood, and his happiness at home with Liccy, his wife, and their numerous children, grandchildren and friends. For this extensive family, there is no more enjoyable way of relaxing than sharing good food and wine. The meals they enjoy together round the old pine farmhouse table at Gipsey House are either fine examples of national dishes of their heritage - Norwegian, French, British, etc - or favourite recipes that have delighted three generations of discerning eaters. Many recipes have acquired a particular significance for the Dahl family over the years, and these are introduced with reminiscenses rich in nostalgia and humour. The recipes are for all occasions, covering family birthday parties, Christmas and Easter celebrations, Roald's passion for chocolate, onions and wine, his enthusiasm for gambling and gardening and finally, a Dahl-style chapter: "Hangman's Suppers" - contributed by Francis Bacon, P.D. James, John Le Carre, Peter Ustinov and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I was part of the Dahl family 17 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
I have loads of cookery books and bought this for an enjoyable read. I had bought a copy for my sister possibly 20 years ago and just got a copy myself this year. It's a wonderful book. The recipes are eclectic and inspiring but the best bit is that glimpse into the Dahl Household. How many of us have longed to have a Roald Dahl style granddad after growing up on his stories? I have read snippets out to my kids a adapted various of the recipes. Just a peach of a book. Thank you Roald for everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, unknown, under-rated 24 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
I found this book in Montreal five years or so ago. Although I'm sure one can buy it elsewhere I haven't seen it in a book store since. Which is very strange. Because Roald Dahl is so enduringly popular and because this book is so very good. The book comprises a colorful cast of characters and a highly eclectic line-up of recipes. It is gently and warmly written and infused with lots of good feeling. Some, perhaps most, of the recipes are either a). far too challenging for unambitious cooks (such as me) or b). inedible - but there are gems here too. And there is also Marwood Yeatman who I am delighted to find is about publish a book of his own. Enough. This book is a treasure trove of lovely stuff and it deserves more readers. Buy.
