Book Description

Every preschooler who is mad for machines will revel in this bright, boisterous picture book about the exciting process of building a road.

"Load the dirt. Load the dirt. Scoop and swing and drop. Slam it down into the truck. Bump! Whump! Whop!"

There are many big machines and busy people involved in building a road, and this riveting picture book follows them every step of the way. From clearing a pathway (SCREEK!) to rolling the tar (SQUELCH!) to sweeping up at the end (SWISH!), ROADWORK is sure to draw young onlookers with its rambunctious rhymes and noisy fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book to read together 14 Dec 2013
Format:Board book
My three year old son and I love this book. He's managed to memorise much of it after a few runs through, and he loves joining in. He even reads it to his friends.

The story is follows a road being built. Each page starts with a repeated line, and ends with some noises to say. Some of the noises can be a bit of a tongue-twister! But this is great, because it shows my son that even adults make mistakes with reading sometimes, and we just go back over the line again. I think this is increasing his confidence to read, and he loves yelling "No Dan! It is 'SPLISH SPLAT SPLOOSH'!!"

The artwork is clean and clear with nice details.

We both recommend this book.

PS: The book is nicely inclusive with a mix of races and sexes performing the work. I like to see this kind of thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very popular with my little chaps 12 Aug 2012

I borrowed this book from thew library for my 3 year old grandsons and they were upset after it was returned so their mum bought it for them.

The boys know the book off by heart, it is a favourite and has been for a while. The machine sounds are hard to interpret when telling the story though ! Excellent little book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roadwork 7 Jan 2012
By Melissa
Format:Board book
Brilliant book for toddlers as well as older children learning to read. My two year old boy loves the sounds and repetition of the words and the illustrations are lively but true to life. Lots to talk about as you read the story and of course directly relatable to scenes you see in your own neighbourhood. My 5 year old daughter also loves the book as she can recognise many of the words and it's relevant to her age group as well. I would thoroughly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for digger fans. 19 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
I found this book in the library and my son loved it so much I decided to buy it. It explains the process of making a new road using rhythmic text ( plan the road, plan the road, mark it on a map, hammer in the marking pegs 'bing, bang and tap'). At the end there is a page explaining the names of all the diggers / trucks used. My son loves this page as much as the story! When we see roadworks when we are out and about he always talks about this book.
