Excellent live album from Townes Van Zandt. One of the great things about this one is that it's made up almost entirely of covers (apart from the last two songs) which means he's singing songs you don't usually hear him singing on his live albums (with a few exceptions). This appears to have been recorded at various venues around the US in the late '70s and very early '80s (apart from the last three songs, which seem to come from the mid '90s). One of his very greatest albums, and an absolute joy from start to finish. Very highly recommended.

I only bought this for TVZ's cover of The Rolling Stones' 'Dead Flowers' which was in the film The Big Lebowski. The rest of the album, however, has some great live covers and the odd original. For example there is a version of Dylan's 'Man Gave Names To All The Animals' which is arguably better than Dylan's.

Then there are songs like 'The Wabash Cannonball' - a must have for anyone interested in American folk/roots. This is a fun version too.

All in all a great purchase without a single disappointing track.

Townes Van Zandt doing his favorite cover songs 23 April 2001
By Bryan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Townes Van Zandt is one of the greatest songwriters to come out of Texas. This album doesn't even have one of his songs on it and it's still one of my favorite TVZ albums. Strange, but true.
Here are some of the artists he covers on Roadsongs: Mick Jagger/Keith Richards, Lightnin' Hopkins, Joe Ely, Bruce Springsteen, A. P. Carter, Bob Dylan and others. This is a great album and as the name suggests great driving music.
For those who care. The version of Dead Flowers that Townes covers on this album also shows up on The Big Lebowski soundtrack as well as the movie (It's the song that plays after The Dude and Walter scatter Donnie's ashes).

Great recording of covers by artist who usually is covered 24 Sept. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

TVZ has had his songs covered by as many varied artist as nearly any singer/songwriter. In a delightful twist, this is a CD by the consummate songwriter, where he covers finely crafted tunes by other songwriters. His voice has never been better (as far as TVZ goes), and he truly makes the songs his own. Highly recommended.

A CD of other peoples songs covered by Townes Van Zandt 21 Mar. 2007
By Rockthrowingbuddhist - Published on Amazon.com

Here's a CD from one of America's greatest song writers performing other people's songs. I have one rule for assessing cover versions: They must either excel the original version or provide a twist or something radically different from the original.

Townes Van Zandt's interpretations are beautiful and in more than one instance outshine the originals. Cherry picked from various tours in the 80's and 90's, the release should be in the collection of every Townes Van Zandt fan.

For the novice, there are other CDs I would recommend first (Live at The Old Quarter, Houston, Texas e.g.), but this release is my #4 or #5 favorite in my Townes collection.

(Note: there are two versions of this release. The Normal (Germany) release has two extra very good, but not essential tracks. There is some litigation going on between the Van Zandt family and his last manager so at this time, I believe the NORMAL release is going to be difficult to find.)

Great collection of covers 18 April 2010
By doctormanny - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
With the help of the Pittsburgh Public Library and Amazon.com, I recently have been making a concerted effort to gain greater exposure to the recordings of the late, great, singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, who has a fairly extensive discography, much of which is not readily available, especially in stores. Surprisingly, this album of cover songs grabbed my attention more immediately than most of the other CDs by him that I have listened to thus far. I don't know why I like this CD so much, but it truly is an enjoyable listen from beginning to end. I would strongly encourage any fans of TVZ who are considering adding "Roadsongs" to their collection to do so--they won't regret it. If nothing else, this CD highlights TVZ's skills as a performer, which are strong, and which often get overshadowed by his highly regarded songwriting skills as well as by his tragic personal history. As was the case with me, listeners are likely to be familiar with a few of the songs ("Ira Hayes," "Dead Flowers," "Racing in the Streets," and "You Win Again"), but not with many of the others. Highly recommended.

I first heard this CD at a friend's house, and it consumed me with wonder. It takes you on a musical trip of time and space. Covers of these classics have never been done better. I highly recommend this CD.
