Synopsis
J. W. Rounsfell was a skilled compositor, and this book is an account of life "on the road", serialized nearly a century ago in the journal of his trade union. Rounsfell gives a very personal account of life on the tramp, creating what is in effect the "Pickwick Papers" of the tramping artisan. The workhouse, the lodging house, the hedgerow are all brought to life, along with the country jobbing and town newspaper offices, the chapels and non-union shops, in which Rounsfell found work and economic assistance.
