This is the most practical guidebook on walking the Spanish "camino" that I've come across. It makes the road "doable". The fact is that this book is in the hands of more pilgrims on the road than any other. Along with the history and sites, it contains exact itineraries, lodging, restaurants, etc. all focused for the true pilgrim who walks without support vehicles. The tips for packing and preparation are correct. The book also has an annex with mountain profiles for the bicycler. The latest editon has a useful pilgrims pull-out with maps and daily itineraries since the book itself is far to heavy to carry in a backpack. I still suggest that these be photocopied for the road, since they will suffer for wear and tear - and the photocopies can be thrown out after each days use, getting rid of excess weight. Bravo! This is the book that has taken me there.

This is the guide I carried with me on my Santiago pilgrimage in 2001; its cultural notes and day-by-day maps were indispensible for planning each day's hike. As a spendthrift, wieght-conscious American, I tore out each day's map as I finished, and am now stuck with paying exorbitantly for a new reference copy!
Pilgrim beware, though -- the maps are not always to scale or up-to-date; and the Camino changes from year to year. Local Juntas are forever adding sidetrips and "improvements" and detours to the older routes outlined here, especially over the Meseta and after O Cebriero.
Invest in this book, and the annually updated "yellow guide" from the Confraternity of St. James in London, and you're good to go!

Knowing nothing of the Camino before leaving, I was delighted to find this guide (5th edition) in Stanfords. While on the road however, I found information available en route far more useful so now consider it merely a nice memento. Significant amounts are being invested in the Camino Frances making it extremely well signposted. You need nothing but an eye on "las flechas amarillas" (yellow arrows).

The most widely referred to text I saw while there is published by El Pais, to my knowledge, unavailable in the UK.
