Product Description

CD Description

Sweden’s Pain of Salvation are likely the very opposite of a predictable and standardized act. They once more prove their unmatched reputation as true artists and modern rock expressionists by delivering Road Salt Two, the twin-companion Road Salt One (2010), as an album equally opulent in creativity and stylistic flirtation, as well as at the same time genuine, musically coherent and brave in its rich amount of texture. In that sense, Road Salt Two is another twelve tracks of sweaty gravel, asphalt butterflies, untrodden paths and brave decisions. The limited edition comes in digipack form and includes two bonus tracks.

What I love most about Pain Of Salvation is their ability to slip effortlessly from style to style with each album, whilst always managing to sound exactly like Pain Of Salvation. Last year's Road Salt One was a mixed affair. Starting and ending strongly, it suffered from a bit of a lull in the middle and was ultimately a little unsatisfactory. Road Salt Two, by contrast, is a delicate flower of an album which ebbs and flows beautifully. With nods to Sabbath, Zeppelin, Purple and countless other classic rock staples it knowingly navigates a path half way between massive retro styled riffs and the more contemporary proggy melodies you would expect of Pain Of Salvation. A superb album and my leading candidate for album of 2011.

For anyone who's never listened to Pain of Salvation before, I'd say this and Road Salt One would be a pretty good place to start. Although the story itself is very disjointed and hard to follow the songs themselves are a lot more accessible than they have been in previous albums and the general themes are a lot more approachable to those who aren't necessarily fans of tragedies. As with most of Pain of Salvation's albums it almost has more in common with a live recording than a typical studio album, although this isn't noticable in any way except for the lack of vocal editting (definitely a good thing; the vocals are flawless); PoS prefer their music with all of it's raw personality intact rather than edited out for the sake of mundane perfection. Daniel Gildenlöw has an extremely dynamic vocal style and a huge (5 octave) range on his voice, but these two factors can also make it a little hard to get used to at first so I recommend listening to a few songs in a row and really paying attention to the lyrics before making a judgement on whether or not you like it.

For old fans, many people make the same comments every time Pain of Salvation release a new album. They want another Entropia or Perfect Element Part I or One Hour by the Concrete Lake, not realising that these albums were all as similar to each other as Road Salt is to them. My point is; go into this album with an open mind, don't expect more of the same and you will not be disappointed. This is indeed the same Pain of Salvation (give or take a few members) that it has been for the past 12 years or so. That's exactly why it's different.

A great release 4 Nov 2011

Another release from the band Pain of Salvation.
As it is known amongst the fans of the band each Pain of Salvation release is a concept album and this one is no exception.
Continuing the concept laid from Road Salt One, Daniel Gildenlow, pushes further and tries to express the choices people make and the concequenses and the dilemmas that appear each time we choose a "road". To me this album is harder to comprehend and needs a lot of sessions with it! As it is with every album the band releases the things a listener gets out from it are always great.
Musically it still rolls in the '70s, but with some avant gardish mooments.
It is a great album, I don't recommend it to new fans of the band though. Once again there are exceptional vocal lines that really reach
through your soul.
In sort a great concept.well written that offers food for thought for everyone. And to my honest opinion, everyone needs to deal with the issues presented in every Pain of Salvation album and this one especially.
Hope this helps.
