Book Description

31 July 2012
Road Rat's Tips is as informative as it is hilarious.

Drawing on 20 years as a professional musician, author Pete Cook gives an exclusive backstage look at the perils and pitfalls of life as a journeyman. In the real world, being able to play well doesn't necessarily guarantee you'll get work as a musician--in fact, playing well is only half the story.

Road Rat's Tips deals with the other half. A valuable read for music students, semi-pro musicians and seasoned professionals alike, the book is packed with good advice and contains hundreds of tips. It works equally well as a cover-to-cover read, something to be dipped into or, indeed, as a quick reference guide.

Road Rat's Tips also provides a hilarious insider's look at the "glamour" of the music business from the journeyman professional's viewpoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rave review for Road Rat's Tips 15 Aug 2012

Road Rat's Tips is a book of carefully-crafted advice specifically aimed at travelling musicians (and would also work for any person who travels in pursuit of their living), written with terrific verve by a man who knows his subject from every possible angle.

Re-emphasising the point at every opportunity that giving your best possible performance is vital to making yourself employable and - moreover - memorable for all the *right* reasons, Pete Cook gives tips which can't fail to ensure safe, trouble-free travel in the name of your art, from keeping your instrument, passport and other valuables safe to finding your way back to a foreign hotel if you get lost or plastered, and (of equal value)on etiquette and diplomacy (plain old good manners).

An instantly engaging read, Road Rat's Tips has a clear layout brim-full of coherent advice and is wonderfully funny, laced with much anecdotal evidence. Pete Cook's writing has a genuine feel; his style is personal: great advice given easily by an old friend.

New to the road or not, this book has something for every musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars A musician's best friend. 4 Mar 2013

There's no other way to describe it - this book is a delight.
It's incredibly informative, it's wise, it's insightful, it's practical - and it will have you crying with laughter.
In spite of what many people believe, the life of a working musician can be tough, demanding and often undignified - and while this book doesn't promise to fix any of that it will nonetheless provide you with enough nous to figure out how to make your artistic life a great deal easier and improve your on-stage performance. And it does this beautifully, without preaching or lecturing - with simple, common-sense tips that we all tend to forget (get to the gig early) through to clearly hard-won hints that are incisive and yet elegant in their simplicity - and all generously seasoned with tales of life on the road that will crease you up.
You could put Baden-Powell, Douglas Adams and Keith Moon in a room with nothing but a typewriter and a crate of whisky and they still wouldn't come up with anything as joyously useful as this book. This one's going in my gig bag (with my genuine Charlie Parker pants).

5.0 out of 5 stars Tip top! 26 Feb 2013

My session musician husband and I have been doing gigs around the UK and abroad for the same amount of time as the author, and everything he says is spot on. From how to avoid pitfalls (there are many) to how to behave (it makes a big difference), this is essential reading, and having taken 20 years to learn all these things (and still learning), I would recommend it to anyone starting out or continuing as a working musician. Pete Cook has also put all his considerable wit and humour into the book, and highlighted boxes contain lots of funny anecdotes, which makes it a very enjoyable read.
An essential reference book.
