Product Description

Review
William Woodruff was born on the floor of the carding room in a Blackburn cotton mill. It was 1916 and he was to live amidst the crushing poverty of the weaving community for most of his childhood. It was a poverty that his family found difficult to endure, having come down in the world since their return from better times in America. Home was an over-crowded two-up, two-down, and life was a daily grind of hard work for little money, interspersed with trips to pawn prized possessions at the local 'pop' shop. Even food was a luxury, to be gorged on when available and dreamt about when scarce. But Billy proved himself adept at acquiring handouts and Sundays were spent touring the various religious institutions of the town - hymns and sermons were a small price to pay for a free fruit bun and steaming mug of tea. It was this penury that Billy eventually ran away from and in London he discovered that education could provide him with the key to the door to a better future. On the evidence of this book William Woodruff is possessed of a towering talent for depicting the minutiae of family life. Here is a man who, by his own confession, slept his way through the entire length of his schooldays, and yet he writes as if he were born with a pen in his hand. Aided by a pin-sharp memory and an eye for the absurd, he brings his idiosyncratic family history to life, a family with its own brand of secrets, values, duties, sorrows and joys. As a social history commentary this is invaluable, as a memoir it is fascinating and as a story of human triumph it is a marvellous read. (Kirkus UK)

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changing and inspiring..., 1 Jun 2002
By A Customer
I happened upon 'The Road to Nab End' by chance and had no idea that I would become attached to the unforgettable characters that Mr. Woodruff revealed to us all in his autobiography. From the start I realized that the true events that I held in my hands were nothing short of remarkable, astonishing and at times, reassuring. As the author wove the story of the first sixteen years of his life during the early part of the 1900's, it became clear that rich or poor, happy or sad, there is always hope and always family.
Not only did I gain a better understanding of the industrial rise and fall in Lancashire, England but I gained a better understanding of human nature. At times it was hard to believe that I was reading a non-fiction book, for it truly felt as if I was reading a novel by Dickens where everyone was poor, pale, and starving.
It is a great service to anyone to read 'The Road to Nab End'. It allows the reader to watch a young boy grow up, into a brave man, in a world where growth and acheivement may as well have been non-existant. The life of William Woodruff is a history lesson to us all and his acheivements, something to aspire to.

5.0 out of 5 stars History as it should be told, 23 Mar 2003
By B. Eaton "twiglet27" (Telford, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The finest thing about this book is that it is a history lesson from a very personal perspective. It is an excellent autobiography and a joy to read, which in themselves are reason enough to read it, but it brings home the human cost of what may now seem like irrelevancies in British and World History. Descriptions of the scale of poverty in early 20th century Lancashire are put forward in a matter of fact manner but still they cause one to balk. If not for the spirit of the Lancashire folk one could be forgiven that one was reading about the third world.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this book to anybody with even a passing interest in the social sciences, but also those that like a good story. To describe it as a masterpiece is fair.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart warming account of a northern childhood, 4 Dec 2002
By A Customer
I was initially reluctant to read this. I'd just finished reading Angela's Ashes and felt that Frank McCourt basically complained throughout the entire book about how hard his life was. I felt like shouting "GET OVER IT." To try and be fair I then raid "Tis" (the follow-up) and that, unbelievably, wallowed even more in self-pity. I feared the worse when I saw this books cover (i imagined it to be a book wallowing in how hard a northern childhood was), but as soon as you rad a couple of pages you just enter another world. Woodruff tells a story not of himself but of the people he knew. It's like the people he knew during that period were the ones he wants us to know about - even though the book is about his childhood he never lets you forget that it was the people he grew up with that shaped his society and his personna. It's a great read, full of terrifically drawn characters. I really enjoyed how he put things into historical context in a very readable manner - I studied the cotton revolution at school but found it deadly dull, but this book made it all seem alive and real. A million miles away from Angela's Ashes and all the better for it - no "woe is me" here, just a heartwarming tale of a northern childhood. Excellent.
