5.0 out of 5 stars Road - Excellent! 7 Nov 2006
Format:Paperback
To say this has no storyline is to not be viewing it as a performer. With the contextual knowledge of the 80's - the political issues, understanding the social and cultural issues of the North - the devastating affects of unemployement on a mass scale, this play has 12 storyline, which run perfectly together. But there are different themes and issues that tie them all together.

This was an excellent piece when I performed it - it's interesting and thought provoking. It has it's funny moments but then it's meant to reflect the depression of the inidividuals in a coarse and raw way.

Brilliant!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very moving piece 13 May 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I have recently done this play for my a-level drama, where I played the parts of Claire, Helen, Maureena and Brian. This play shows how life was in 1987 and how depressing the ressession was for a particular road in Lancashire. Every single one of the houses on the road are affected and each house has a different tale to tell. Scullery , the road's own homeless drunk, takes you round the road house by house. There are bits that will make you laugh, cry and think. A very moving and entertaining piece, but if you are put off by strong language beware.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Play With Attitude! 25 April 2003
Format:Paperback
I am rehearsing this play with my drama class for my A-Level and I play the part of drunken narrator Scullery. When given the script to read, I went through a series of emotions. Cartwright's play shows the harsh reality of life on 'Road' and the varied type of characters that live there. This play can make you laugh one moment and weep the next, a wonderfully written piece with no trace of a dull moment throughout! Buy it now, you don't know what you're missing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great play! 4 Dec 2013
By Beks
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Jim Cartwright's first play, written in 1986. It's a great read and very easy to visualise in a theatrical space. The script still had pencil markings in it...but the supplier did state that it was 'used'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drama teacher's dream 22 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Excellent text for performance at AS - group or monologues/duologues, as presented as episodic vignettes so you can dip in to create an edit to suit. Language unsuitable for younger performers/audiences. Sort of Shamelees-meets-Coronation Street. Gritty, working class accents obligatory.
