Book Description

May 1978

Available for the first time in 25 years, this book of songs and sheet music, a collaboration between J. R. R. Tolkien and the composer Donald Swann, will delight Tolkien fans everywhere as the book to stand beside their copies of Lord of The Rings, the essays, poems and calendars. Includes a bonus CD containing performances of all the songs.

In this song book the composer Donald Swann gives Tolkien characters Bilbo, Treebeard, Sam Gamgee and Tom Bombadil tunes for their ballads of the road.

Professor Tolkien approved of this and added a tune of his own, decorated the book in his own hand and added a glossary of Elvish terms and lore that appears nowhere else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Look for the third edition 11 Jan 2003
By Kathleen Cobcroft - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The Road Goes Ever On is an interesting acquisition for keen Tolkienists for all the reasons other reviews have already gone into. I borrowed a copy of the original edition from my local library years ago, and was thrilled to find the third edition (c1993) at a bookshop recently. (Sadly, the composer passed away in 1994, so no further editions are likely.)

The third edition includes additional settings of "Bilbo's last song" and "Luthien Tinuviel" (from the Silmarillion) and comes with a CD that contains recordings of the whole song cycle, accompanied by piano. (The singer who does most of the songs seems a little... affected with lots of rolled Rs, but it's a good reference to listen to before playing.)

4.0 out of 5 stars There is more than music in this book 29 Dec 2000
By Michael Martinez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The Road Goes Ever On was first published in the early 1960s, when Tolkien was still answering a great deal of fan mail asking questions about Middle-earth. There was so much more he wanted to tell his reading audience that he sometimes leaped at the chance to give them a little more about his Elves.

The Road Goes Ever On thus provides a glimpse of Elven history and mysticism found nowhere else. Linguists have also perused the analysis of the poems Tolkien provided. There is something for everyone in this volume.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting look at the music of the Lord of the Rings 15 Jun 1998
By none - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Sheet music for some of the wonderful poetry in Tolkien's world. Music for the songs sung by everyone from trolls to elves. If you are musically inclined, this book is a wonderful tool that helps the reader to understand the various cultures JRR led the reader through.
