Product Description

Late one night, two brothers learn that their sister has died in the worst way imaginable. She's found, strangled, in a desolate place hundreds of miles from their East London home. Ruben is the smarter of the two, with a gift for getting into other people's hearts; Cole may be older, but he's a devil's angel who doesn't care if he lives or dies. Together, they set out to find their own answers and retrace Rachel's final journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't have any nails left by the end!, 18 Feb 2007
This review is from: The Road of the Dead (Paperback)
Whew! Kevin certainly likes to take his readers by the neck and shake them violently. This isn't a comfortable read but it's impossible to put down. Ruben is the central character, with telepathic abilities, especially where his family is concerned. The book begins with the discovery that his older sister Rachel has been raped and murdered in some remote place in Dartmoor. Ruben's older brother, Cole, decides to go to Dartmoor and find out what happened - which means Ruben feels he must go too. Cole is a loose cannon, dangerous and with a violent temper. However, he's also the more streetwise of the two and feels a responsibility for the safety of his younger brother.

In Dartmoor, the two brothers find that their sister's murder was a lot more complicated than a random killing. It seems that everyone in the village is involved in some way, but Cole's impetuous nature soon means that Ruben and he end up in extreme danger themselves. The violence is graphic and real, and as with his other books, there is no pat solution to the story. I felt vaguely queasy at points, but that just shows what a powerful effect the book was having on me.

What Kevin manages to do better than anyone else is to create characters that are overwhelmingly human. They aren't nice or kind on the whole, and they're usually self-absorbed - just like real people. But they can also be capable of great love and affection - and weakness. I suspect that's one of the reasons why his books are so strong. You can't help but recognise the human weaknesses in his characters.

That and a blood-thumpingly good plot, obviously.

Not for the faint-hearted - but that's why it's so good.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever!, 26 Jan 2008
By
This review is from: The Road of the Dead (Paperback)
I am not ashamed to admit this at all. This book has ruined most other books for me. It was shortlisted for the Carnegie 2007 Award which was then given to Just In Case by Meg Rossof or something like that which didnot deserve to win. Read my review of this book to see why. This boook should have been given the Award. This book is BRILLIANT from start to finish starting instantly with action (Only reason why I read it. I NEVER read a book if the action doesn't start from the beginning!). It begins which the main character sitting in a car on a rainy day. During this time he uses a special power he has and discovers his sister is dead. It later turns out she was murdered. The he and his brother are taken on a whirl-wind adventure in which they not only find out who killed her but also stumble across a deadly gang...

WARNING: This book contains quite strong fighting, swearing and gang references*. I reccomend it for over 12 Year Olds. But don't let this put you off. It is a very good book and your children will probably love it. Just read it first, then if you're happy read it to them. As far as I'm concerned I was 12** when I read it and I LOVED it!

*- Not quite sure how to put this. Rough gang-like behaviour is the best way to put it.

**- I'm just using my mum's account for this review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absoloutely brilliant! A "must read!", 3 Nov 2007
This review is from: The Road of the Dead (Paperback)
I seriously reccomend this book!!
It is chilling to read, and is possibly the only book that made me scared to read on at certain parts, but boy i'm glad I did!
The writer has a brilliant way of getting you to empathise with the charecters, and it is endearing to see the relationship between Ruben and Cole develop through the book.
Brilliant plot and charecters! This book will keep you guess from page to page!
