Sat Nav with Ord Survey maps 4 walking inone box, 27 May 2007
Never before has it been possible to do what should be such a simple thing; if you like to go out for a simple week-end walk.
Just take this sat-nav in your car, punch in the starting car park place for a good country walk; then when you arrive there, just whip the sat nav out of your car, and switch over to your full set of 1:50000 OS maps displayed on-screen, with your exact position... so off you go;
You'll never get lost on any footpath, track or even across un-marked open countryside.
Strangest thing is, that nowhere, either on the packaging or in the user manual, makes the least or slightest reference to this amazing capability...
Only when you hook it up to the internet (cable supplied in the box) does it tell you about the free download of all OS National Parks 1:50000 mapping! Then you can easily buy and install more OS maps from MemoryMap at 1:50000 or even 1:25000!
This must put Navigator 7000 high up as top candidate for the worst-marketed hi-tech product of the year!
This product claims to be waterproof, but I'd rather not try to test this seriously. Buy a good water-tight plastic bag to keep it - and your cell phone / digital camera etc if out walking anywhere!
I bought mine for £220 in Halford's plus another £100 for full 'MemoryMap' South/Central UK OS maps which I easily trsansfered onto a 2GB SDcard.
It all works quite fine!!!
If all that's not enough, as an extra bonus, Road Angel puts a heavy emphasis on every location of all speed traps and road cameras - so you're always warned in advance. Just update once a month on the Road Angel Web site, to keep your squeaky-clean driver's licence!
Additional comment, added on 17 December 2007:
Well, it had worked ok during the past 6 months of active use, but the battery life is a constant problem.
Real 'hard-core' type outside satnav units usually work on simple 'AA' size rechargable batteries, so it's never a problem to have a few extra charged-up spares in you pocket, to stick in when power is fading.
Road Angel's battery is inaccessible and un-replaceable - a bad design fault from my point of view.
Fantastic though sat-nav is, it does use up an awful lot of battry life! No matter of course inside your car, but outside, on hills, mountains or even flat open fields, then it's a real problem!
I've now got a Nokia N95 mobile phone, which includes sat-nav, Ordinance Survey mapping from www.viewfinder.co.uk (£140 for the whole of Uk @ 1:50,000) which at least gives me the option of swapping over batteries during a long walk if needed.
In my new latest opinion, go for the Nokia anytime.

Just don't ...., 24 Jan 2009
I had an orginal Navigator which worked absolutely fine until it froze compleletely on me one day. I sent it back to Road Angel who said that it wasn't repairable, so they could offer me a "new" unit at a "special price". Like a fool I fell for this.
I suspect that the "new" unit turned out to be a reconditioned one and it is simply hopeless - the number of times it tells you to turn right when you are on a motorway or dual carriageway is frightening. It constantly changes its mind - often tells you to turn left and then a few seconds later tells you to turn right. It frequently takes you the longest most in-direct way.
Whatever you do, don't buy this product.

Avoid this product, 8 Mar 2009
I bought this GPS as an "upgrade" from my Garmin etrex 2 years ago and primarily for its ability to display Memory Map OS maps, the software which I had purchased for my PC. The maps were a bit fiddly to downmload onto the device but once downloaded all seemed ok , until I needed to use it for ots intended purpose - off road wilderness mountain biking. The first trip i took it on it worked fine for the first day then on day two it lost the satellite signal (there was light drizzle) and it didn't work at all on day three- Sent back to road angel on my return and it came back having been checked and nothing found wrong with it. The next trip similar thing happened, and the next it lost the route I'd programmed in - i returned it again, and now out of warranty and am told it cannot be "econoimcally repaired" due to there being internal water damage - when I told the repairs assistant it is advertised as being "waterproof" she said oh no its only "water resistant", although it says waterproof on the box and also website -so am left with a hopeless device that falls well short of my expectations. This had to be the worst product I have ever spent good money on. Do'nt make the same mistake I made. I should also mention that it was hopeless on road too - on a holiday in Yorkshire las year it took me on a few wild goosechases and i ended up being the laughing stock of the company I was in. I spent more money on diesel going the most moronic way from A-B than the device was worth ( it had me going 2 miles down a dirt track with a Ford at the bottom at on point) Dont buy
