5.0 out of 5 stars Road - Excellent!, 7 Nov 2006
By S. Derrick "Stazandra" (Uk, Somerset) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
To say this has no storyline is to not be viewing it as a performer. With the contextual knowledge of the 80's - the political issues, understanding the social and cultural issues of the North - the devastating affects of unemployement on a mass scale, this play has 12 storyline, which run perfectly together. But there are different themes and issues that tie them all together.

This was an excellent piece when I performed it - it's interesting and thought provoking. It has it's funny moments but then it's meant to reflect the depression of the inidividuals in a coarse and raw way.

Brilliant!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very moving piece, 13 May 2000
By A Customer
I have recently done this play for my a-level drama, where I played the parts of Claire, Helen, Maureena and Brian. This play shows how life was in 1987 and how depressing the ressession was for a particular road in Lancashire. Every single one of the houses on the road are affected and each house has a different tale to tell. Scullery , the road's own homeless drunk, takes you round the road house by house. There are bits that will make you laugh, cry and think. A very moving and entertaining piece, but if you are put off by strong language beware.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cracking Yorkshire drama for the stage!, 6 Jan 2002
By A Customer
JIm Cartwright... writer of "Little Voice". One of the last few "honest" playwrights of the world. His words cut like knives, and the dialogue bounces like a rubber ball! Natural and hardcore, the brutish realism of modern day life is brought to life in this blackest of black comedies. Brilliant for a young, strong cast, and can be staged in such a wide variety of ways there will never be two shows the same! BUY IT YOU FOOLS!
