Rivers of an Unknown Land makes me want to go to Russia. The book is an essential resource for the hard line logistics involved in traveling to the former USSR for a river mission. Vladimir Gavrilov provides detailed maps for hundreds of rivers by neatly organizing the book into separate regions of the former USSR. In addition to these maps, the book contains descriptions of major rapids, discussion of local wildlife and geography, and hints on how to arrange transportation, organize gear, and purchase supplies in each region.

If you're planning a river expedition to Siberia and looking for specifics on hundreds of rivers in Russia then this is the book for you. If you're not planning a trip then be careful, the personal narratives of Vladimir's adventures throughout the book combined with the specific details that make a trip of this magnitude seem doable are all so clearly laid out in Rivers of an Unknown Land that you may find yourself planning a trip soon!

The true success of Rivers of an Unknown Land, and testament to Vladimir's writing ability and the ambition of his project, is the fact that this is a guide book full of hard facts that reads like a novel. Sure, you can look up a particular river in the table of contents and reference detailed mile by mile descriptions, but you can also read the book from beginning to end and trace Vladimir and his team's adventures across the vast landscape of the former USSR. I found myself laughing and cheering on the expeditions as they faced challenge after challenge and persevered with their unique Russian spirit. The book is a joy to read. It's peppered with great photographs and stories from Vladimir's adventures that make the accompanying maps and river descriptions come to life.

Even if you have no interest in river travel, you will learn much about the former USSR from Vladimir's account of years of adventure in a place that few westerners have even seen. The title gets it right. This is definitely an unknown land, but I feel educated and inspired after reading Vladimir's book from cover to cover. I didn't even know I wanted to visit Siberia until I read this book. Now, I'm planning an expedition for next year.

a unique book for readers & adventurers 31 July 2007

This book does an amazing job of giving the reader first-hand information about traveling in Russia by river. The author has a vast amount of personal experience that he lends to the chapters with the addition of humorous anecdotes. This book would be good for someone planning a russian rafting trip or for someone interested in learning more about the part of the world called Siberia. I have traveled through Siberia by train; now I want to check out her rivers!
going big in a far away land 8 Jun 2006

The basic gear for most whitewater enthusiasts is a boat, life jacket, paddle and a clue. If you were interested in traveling to an unfamiliar river, often this gear, some local knowledge and a "river bible" such as this book will be sufficient. However the desolation of Russia makes this book a must for any would-be adventurer. Anyone who has been on a commercial rafting trip would probably never consider a rafting trip in Siberia, but with the side stories of tales from the authors own expeditions, even a novice boater can get a true sense of danger, where even a small problem can be life threatening, and how important teamwork is when you are in the vast expanse of this land. With Rivers of an Unknown Land, the reader is so close to the experience you can almost taste the vodka.
