Amazon.co.uk Review
This account of the brutalities of European colonialism concentrates on four episodes--the destruction of the Aztecs, the exterminations of the Tasmanians and the Herero and the cowing of the Apache. Starting with a general statement that the expansion of European Christian civilisation has been at the expense of tribal peoples throughout the world, who were seen as either objects for exploitation or study, or as simply surplus, Cocker argues that the pattern was set by the encounter with the Aztecs--Spaniards hot from the reconquista were not in the mood to be tolerant of blood-sacrificing cannibals, no matter how urbane and sophisticated. Poorer peoples like the Tasmanians and the Herero he sees as simply victims; only the Apache made the whole process so costly that they became heroes to their conquerors. Some of this is special pleading--Cocker neglects the role of disease and sometimes talks as if Europeans were uniquely bad--compared to, say, Genghis Khan?--and his concentration on selected case studies ignores the issues raised by more complex cases like the Maori or India. Nonetheless, it is a terrifying indictment of atrocities all the worse for the sanctimonious efficiency with which they were carried out. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
In a little more than 400 years a handful of small, highly advanced nation states at the western extremity of the Eurasian continent brought within their political orbit most of the diverse peoples of four continents. The story of how they did so is a tale of extraordinary human achievement in adversity, but also a tragedy involving the slaughter of millions and the extinction of numerous distinct peoples. This book focuses in detail on four episodes: the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the Andean empire of the Inca, the British decimation of the Tasmanian Aborigines, the Euro-American dispossession of the Apache, and the German subjugation of the Herero and Nama of south-west Africa. These four narratives describe the process by which native tribal people were defeated and in some cases exterminated, the intellectual and moral rationale of the conquerors, and the often extraordinary heroism of the conquered.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic Tragedy. Highly Recommended., 15 Jul 2001
The premise of the book has become so cliched that its fundamental truth has almost become obscured. Cocker uncovers in painstaking detail the results of European colonialism in four areas of the world. Without ever romanticizing the societies (the bloody side of the Aztecs is particularly stressed) that are conquered, he paints a tragic and moving. A valuable antidote to apologists for European/Western Imperialism.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mine's a sherry, 6 Nov 1999

(REAL NAME)
Flicking seemingly indiscriminately from one corner of the world to another, without any convincing reasons as to why, the undeniable importance of this path of subtlety will soon hit you square in the face like a well aimed brick. To say that this book is brutally humbling would be obvious, after all, that should be what you expect. It goes much further. This is not new stuff, which is fine as it does not pretend to be... it is faultlessly researched, packed with information that you know you should know (and probably don't) and worded so eloquenty that you could almost be forgiven for dancing over the harrowing content. I still stagger in disbelief at the general ignorance most people have of the true history of our empires (speaking as an European), as much as I stagger in disbelief that this ignorance is encouraged by the various education syllabi 'decision makers.' This, or a similar text, should be standard reading for everyone. Chin chin
