Product Description

CD Description

Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three are from St. Louis, Missouri. They play a wonderfully fresh and quirky kind of roots music that combines a riverboat ragtime sound with Delta-meets-Appalachia songwriting, all laid down in front of a big, big swingin beat. They were a big success at Celtic Connections in January 2010 and plan further UK gigs. LaFarge is a neo-hobo, constantly travelling and continually inspired by early American roots music. But while Pokey LaFarge and his crew may summon up the likes of Blind Blake, Dan Hicks, or Leon Redbone, and their music may be a fitting soundtrack to R. Crumb s comics, don t call it old-timey ! Pokey and the South City Three s unique sound is certainly eclectic, rough around the edges and often a throwback to past times, featuring parlour guitar, guitjo (a guitar-tuned six-string banjo) kazoo and harmonica, but they give it all a modern twist - they call it Riverboat Soul . This is their 3rd album. "Lawd knows we need people like Pokey LaFarge. Coming on like a bastard son of Woody Guthrie and Blind Blake, this is the kind of stuff Ry Cooder s been trying to do for decades: no-holds-barred, honest-to-goodness sheet-kicking music of the highest order. - Julian Piper, Acoustic Magazine

I bought this album when I went to see these guys at the Blue Coconut Club last night in Pulborough, in the deep South (of West Sussex). Amazing show, great playing, great singing, and REAL entertainment, something most modern singers know nothing about. This CD captures their stage sound and feel pretty well, and should appeal to anyone who enjoys acoustic american music with a goodtime, (old timey if you must,) feel.
I like Leon Redbone, have all his stuff, but like this even more, high energy, lively, fun, goodtime music. Makes me wish I'd been born in the South.(Mississippi/Louisiana, not West Sussex!)
Great, great, great!!!!!! Buy it.

Pure American Music 4 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Pokey LaFarge is the real thing. A kid hobo musician who knows a thing or two about pure American blues/folk/jazz, the kind of thing that powered St.Louis and Kansas City in the 1920's and 1930's, but hip enough to love right now. The songs are acoustic, sparkling, varied and rough enough around the edges to sound heartfelt. He sings with white soul and plays guitar with verve. Even his kazoo solos are first rate(no kidding).

His backing trio are also more than competent, and howl along with the Pokester on most of the record. His single La La Blues is good, but there are even better tracks than this all the way down the 12. One or two holes, perhaps, but I'd say this is the most enjoyable LP since Electric Dirt by the great Levon Helm.

This is his third CD, and on the strength of this, the other two must be worth buying.
For those of us in London, he is playing in Kilburn on 25 August, and I will be catching him.
I hear he is dynamite live.
