Half of Ocean Colour Scene at their very best,
By
This review is from: Live On The Riverboat (Audio CD)
Although the album is generally advertised as being 'Ocean Colour Scene', it in fact features only one half of Ocean Colour Scene, as Damon Minchella (who has since left OCS) and Steve Cradock were on tour with Paul Weller at the time. However, this does not detract from the album once tiny little bit (well, some of Steve's guitar work wouldn't go amiss), as Oscar Harrison is fantastic on the drums and piano, and Simon Fowler is simply incredibly talented to sing so well (or play the harmonica on 'So Low') at the same time as playing the accoustic guitar so well.Ocean Colour Scene have always been at their best live, in fact they are one of those few greatlive bands whose recordings live sound better than their studio recordings, and while it isn't as good as, for example their recorded gig at Stirling Castle, this holds true nonetheless and as Ocean Colour Scene's songs always sound very good on the accoustic guitar, this listens like an accoustic version of songs for the front row, although with a few differences. It's worth buying just to get a live version of made-to-be-played-live 'The Day We Caught The Train'. Fans of OCS's rockier songs, like 'Riverboat Song' and '100 Mile High City' will be disappointed, as Cradock's absence mean s they couldn't play these, but this absence is made up for with a mixture of B-sides (Robin Hood, Mariners Way), album tracks (It's My Shadow, Foxy's Folk-Faced, etc.), old classics (the day we caught the train, traveller's tune, profit in peace, etc.) and a couple of songs from their awesome latest album 'North Atlantic Drift' (north atlantic drift and second hand car). Hopefully Ocean Colour Scene will release another live album with all three remaining members playing on it, but even if they do, every fan should own a copy of this, as you won't find these songs sounding like this anywhere else. And don't take the critics too seriously on their reviews of Ocean Colour Scene - if they really were jaded, bombastic dad-rock throwbacks they wouldn't still be releasing top 20 singles with next to no publicity, and claims that their days are numbered is bollucks frankly, especially with their next album coming out next year.

Pure Genius,
This review is from: Live On The Riverboat (Audio CD)
Having only discovered the brilliance of Ocean Colour Scene last summer Iam not a 'die hard' fan but at this moment in time posess every album thatthey have released with 'Live On The Riverboat' being arguably one of thebest. It starts out with the catcy 'So Low' and it epitomises the rest ofthe CD with the mellow 'Mariners Way' being my favourite off the wholealbum. OCS are best in their element and this is certainly that. It isgenius on a CD, a must buy for all OCS fans, (and everybody else).

A great recording!,

This is so simple. Two guys, their voices, a guitar and percussions...Simon Fowler and Oscar Harrison, the 50% (It was then) from Ocean Colour Scene playing a very enjoyable collection of songs. The crowd gets mad about them and we do too. It's one of those records that was made with the heart. It has some of their greatest songs: "The Day We Caught The Train", "I Wanna Stay Alive With You" or "Mariner's Way" just to mention a few. But the best of this album is that makes you sing along and feel very comfortable, even if this band is not your favourite group. So take your seat, be sure you're on the front row and have a good drink! Cheers! this will be an intimate evening with two good musicians. ¡SALUD!
