From Amazon.co.uk

Meryl Streep tried her hand at action films with this Curtis Hanson film and proved herself quite credible, bringing emotion as well as the willingness to kick butt. She plays a suburban mum and former white-water rafting guide who is taking her family on a raft trip for summer vacation. But overworked Dad (David Strathairn) can't make the trip so she and her son leave without him--and walk right into trouble. Killers on the run (Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly) abduct them and force Streep to take them down the most dangerous stretch of river to elude the cops. Hanson understands how to pace and construct this kind of action fodder but it's strictly formula stuff, enlivened only by the depth of Streep's portrayal and the viciousness of Bacon's character. --Marshall Fine

5.0 out of 5 stars River heroism 13 Oct 2008
A beautiful film about the Colorado River. The hero is the river and the nature it crosses, the gorges and the rapids and the falls. And you will go down the river in a light boat. Beautiful indeed. Then the film sets a plot on that river of a nice vacationing family held hostage by the surviving thieves of a cattle auction robbery who try to escape the police after the robbery by using the river and the expertise of the mother of this family. This adds some family tension with a father who is working too hard as an architect and neglecting, in a way, his family, and yet he will save his wife and his son from the grip of the thieves after having escaped them before. Courage, for sure, tenacity definitely. And the beauty of this river all over and always. This plot is multiplying the beauty of the river just as if it took a lot of courage for the river itself to go down this valley and its gorges.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected. 1 Feb 2001
By A Customer
I sat down to watch this .. not really expecting to sit through the whole thing but I did. The reasons why are as follows. The director: Curtis Hanson knows his stuff and has paced the film perfectly. He's also the director of the masterpiece 'L.A. Confidential'. The Cast: Meryl Streep is well suited to her role and has some great moments in the film but Kevin Bacon wipes the floor with all the other actors. His portrayal of the evil robber is fantastic. He was born for the role. The plot: The story line is nothing amazing but it's very entertaining and doesn't try to be too serious, which is always a good thing. There is only one complaint, and that's the lack of extras but still, it's a great film. Buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Meryl Streep's Best Films 3 Aug 2011
By B. Fox
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
We first saw this film on the ferry going to France a few years ago and we thoroughly enjoyed it then. The added bonus (as far as I was concerned) was the inclusion of Kevin Bacon as the bad guy. Personally he could play any part he likes and I couldn't care less. Anyway, Meryl Streep's acting was brilliant and very believable as the mum reverting to her adventurous youth and, along with her rather boring husband, saving the day from a river full of badies. Even though I must have watched this film approximately 5 times over the years, I still find it exciting and the scenery is stunning. Not taxing in any way, but an above average movie I would highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant film with great actors 3 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Film starts with a disintergrating family unit. Workaholic architect dad ignores and is irritated by his family, so that all laughing stops when he gets home from work. He never joins in the fun and cancels holidays. Wife Gail(Meryl Streep) believes their marriage to be over as he disappoints their young son yet again, cancelling a family trip. However mother and son set off on their own to navigate a river by dinghy that Gail knew as a young girl (she had even worked as a river guide). As they are about to set off the son makes friends with another group of three men, who are going on the same journey on the river. One of them (Kevin Bacon) starts flirting with Gail. Just then, unexpectedly her husband turns up to join in with the trip after all. The thrills begin as the two separate boat parties become increasingly dependent on each other, much to the reluctance of Gail's family as their suspicions of the men deepen.
The film builds up the tension and shocks magnificently as you urge Gail to safety. I can watch it again and again.

The film might be a few years old, but it is one of the best. Fantastic scenery and a real nail-biter. Without foul language as well!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rocky Mountain Adventure 14 May 2009
This movie is a tense thriller about a vacationing family on a whitewater rafting trip in the Montana wilderness that turns tragic. Filmed in the kootenai National Forest in NW Montana and the Siskiyou National Forest in SW Oregon, with stunning telephoto shots of the whitewater action and beautiful river canyon photography makes this film journey worth taking.

With the river scenes are filmed in New Zealand this thriller is a good all round film. A family on a rafting trip get snared by a couple criminals. Kevin Bacon plays a great bad guy role. Some excellent action scenes in the water made this an enjoyable film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extreme Streep and Creepy Bacon 13 July 2010
Easily one of the best thriller stories - in such a believably authentic setting, Streep is superb in every way, intelligent, athletic, sensual, yet not overtly so, and strong in the character she brings to the role of independent woman, whilst still the wife and devoted mother; Kevin Bacon plays the "likeable" villain oh so well... leaving you wondering whom will get the upper hand in the end; then the twist with Meryl's husband in the cast (Stathairn) is a turn you wouldn't expect at the beginning... truly a breathtaking story. Thanks to a fine cast and director Curtis Hanson and crew. Well done 5 stars
