5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best metal albums ever recorded 2 Mar 2003
Format:Audio CD
I got this album when it first came out, 10 years ago, when I was 13 years old. Now, I was certainly impressed with it, but you might think that with the passing of all this time, my enjoyment might decrease. Not in the slightest. Out of about 500 CDs that I now have, this is the best of the lot. In my opinion (admittedly as a slightly biased long-term fan), this is probably the best metal album ever released. Every single one of the 'proper' songs are beyond reproach, and the dialogue breaks Monday, Thursday and Friday hold the whole album together allowing the theme to flow through the whole release. Musically too, this was a bit of a groundbreaker. Nowadays it's nothing special to hear a band combining hard riffs with melodic vocals, but in 1993, it was a rare thing indeed. Also, some songs contain elements of NYHC, in a similar style to Biohazard or Sick Of It All, if not quite so aggressive. All in all, if you think bands like Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Linkin Park are good (they're not) then buy this to see where they stole their decent ideas from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such an understated classic 24 Mar 2014
By pdub
Format:MP3 Download
For someone who had been into 'this type of music' since the early 80s I have no idea why not just this album, but this band had passed me by. Possibly due to the internet not being around when this was released I tended to listen to the more mainstream metal.

The crunching riffs, Caputos unique vocals and their ability to speed up and slow down several times on the same track makes this a seminal album that should be part of every 'heavy music' lovers collection.

Considering the age of this album the music is still fresh, relevant and exciting in 2014 as it would've been 20 years ago.

Buy, buy, buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars River still runs 10 July 2012
Format:Audio CD
I find it very hard to write a review of one of your favoutite albums of all time. In any case, I certainly back the current reviews here. I also bought this record when it came out (I was 16). Back then I was not so aware of this but it was shock to the core of metal as it was known at that time. People then gave it a name (crossover metal) after which many clones of LOA saw the light of day. LOA's River Runs Red is still the very best metal album I know. Keith's singing style is one of a kind (Volbeat's Michael Poulsen sometimes comes close), both emotional and powerful, the riffs blow you away and Sal's drumming is magic. i had never heard that kind of drumming before. I guess he kind of invented a style all of his own. Though he style is reminscent of when he was part of Type O Negative. If you are hesitating to buy this, don't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still loving it eight years later 21 Jun 2008
Format:Audio CD
I've been a lot of things in the last eight years. I've become a completely different person, and there's a few small things that anchor me to, remind me of, and help me thank life for, the angry teenager that bought this album when it came out...this album being one of them.
It's not the most cheerful, but there's not a single song I would say I don't love. Never has the term "All killer, no filler" applied to an album more aptly. It's sad, angry and beautifully executed. Keith Caputo has the best voice of any singer on any album I own and "£his time" still brings a tear to my eye. I loved it then and I love it now...a real timeless jewel!
