I first saw this show by mistake one night on ITV4 while just skipping through and literally became 'hooked' on it. The reason: unknown. He found a living piranha fish inside another piranha fish; told the story of a fish that swims up a person's `dark area'; and was almost dragged off a cliff by a giant catfish: AWESOME. It doesn't seem that original, or gripping, or indeed different from any other Discovery Planet style documentary where it makes out that the lesser spotted seahorse is a man eater and serial killer. And yet: I watched, watched again, purchased the DVD and now am a frequent visitor to the website. As sad as I am, there is something really cool about the show. It is helped however by extreme fisherman / biologist / explorer / real-life, gritty Indiana Jones Jeremy Wade. His enthusiasm bursts out every second, and not in a comedic Steve Irwin way, no he seems to actually love what he does and is full of scientific know-how that just pours out this mouth like spit. Enjoyable and interesting, `River Monsters' is a good old fashion "cool" show to watch - however, Jeremy does have a strange obsession with a fish I would never consider to be able to fit a man inside its mouth: The Catfish. Not quite Jaws but hey - if Jeremy is scarred of it, I'm sure as not going back in the water...
