They say everyone has a story to tell, Joe Pieri most certainly does. His parents came to Scotland when he was a child and Joe began working in his father's fish and chip shop the Savoy in Glasgow. The book captures the city of Glasgow perfectly. He also captures perfectly the shock and upset of being sent to an Internment camp in Canada when Italy entered the second world war. He illustrates the contrasts between Italian and Scottish culture and although these cultures are so different the common humanity and kindness of people throughout the world shines through.
Like many other immigrant families the Pieris first lived in the poorest Glasgow streets and through sheer hard work and effort progressed to the more affluent suburbs. This is an inspirational story which conveys Joe's deep love for his Scottish wife Mary and his children and grandchildren.
Joe is a natural story teller and this is an enjoyable book.
