Product Description

Review

"River Deep is a simmering mystery, set in a seemingly peaceful town in England. But a terrible murder has committed, of a man who cannot be positively identified -- and with another man gone missing. A female coroner must question her instincts concerning the death, before more crime is unleashed upon the defenseless village in this tense page-turner." -- The Midwest Book Review's "The Bookwatch"

Product Description

Life in Shrewsbury is normally calm and uneventful. However, when the River Severn bursts its banks, a body is discovered floating in a flooded cottage. Coroner Martha Gunn is one of the first to be called to the scene. In the fetid cottage Martha 's instincts tell her that this is a homicide -- a hunch borne out by the post mortem. The victim is presumed to be the cottage 's tenant, James Humphreys, who recently went missing. However, when asked to identify the body, his wife Cressida is adamant that it is not her husband. Martha Gunn is left with many perplexing questions. Who, then, is the victim? Why has he been murdered? And where has the real Mr. Humphreys gone?

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull, dull, dull!, 29 Feb 2008

Based on this book I wouldn't read anything else by the author. It was trying so hard to convince the reader of the charisma and depth of the main characters that the descriptions started to make me cringe! Do we really care in a 'thriller' if the main character slips her feet into 'M&S black mules' or any other type of footwear? I think not! Totally fragmented and lots of ends left undone for seemingly no reason- wreaths and mice left at the front door- by who or what we will never know! A silly book with no real story- into the bargain bucket with this one I reckon.

I loved this book, I particularly liked Martha Gunn, the sub plot being a strong woman alone, raising her family. The story is creepily atmospheric, murder and mystery among the ever present threat of the flooding river Severn, endangering homes and people. I had hoped to read more about Martha, her family and the enigmatic men in her life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but lots of errors!, 28 Jun 2006
James Humphreys becomes John on one page - Was it the Welsh version of squelch? She throws the duvet back twice on arising from bed - New sentence starts with lower case - "Who won the Ashes?" question not suitable for "Who wants to be a millionaire" - Quite a few missing words but pretty low on typo errors (apart from squelch!) Who was responsible for Wreath on step and dead mouse tied with string? A few other inconsistancies but these are all I can recall for now.
