I was excited to order this book because I hoped it would inspire me to cook quick and healthy mid-week meals. I'm good at cooking quick meals mid-week but sometimes their nutritional value is questionable!

Hugh explains in the introduction that when he refers to `Light and Easy' it's not necessarily about quick and low calorie recipes, but instead more about eating better and cutting down on certain things a lot of us will likely consume too much of (mainly wheat and milk). The `easy' references straight forward recipes that aren't `faffy' or too involved. So whilst you might be macerating something or marinating, you're free to do other things, so recipes aren't necessarily quick but they are easy.

At first my heart sank because the book was not what I anticipated... but then reading Hugh's introduction actually spurred me to cook from it.

I have posted a full recipe list at the end of this review to help you decide in your purchase, and any questions please post them as a comment and I will try and answer as soon as I can.

The book is split into 9 recipe sections with an introduction (which I highly recommend you do read before doing any recipes) and also a final section on ingredients which describes some of the things that have become `essentials' in Hugh's kitchen since cutting down on wheat and dairy, again definitely worth a read before heading to recipes sections if you can.

This is a really good addition to my cookery books. It is another way of looking at food and eating healthily, by excluding dairy and wheat. As a person with a partner who is vegan, it is useful to find options without dairy. The book is by no means vegetarian or vegan though, although there are plenty of options in there that are. There are also some really good meat and fish options in there for those who want them.

Many of the recipes are not instantly what would appeal to me - they are not the kind of thing that I would look at in the book and automatically think I must try. However, I have taken the plunge and made some of these recipes now, and am so glad that I did! They are so tasty and have opened my mind to trying more adventurous and different things.

There isn't anything really in the book that is too difficult to source in the supermarket, and none of the recipes are too complicated to make.

Overall, this is a good book, with lots of new ideas.

Recommended.

Thank you so much Hugh for writing this book! I cannot have dairy or gluten so this book is perfect for me. All other books seem to be EITHER dairy free OR gluten-free so it is very difficult for me to find recipes I can enjoy. Really appreciate it, good on you!!

Fantastic new book - I have already tried the chicken with lentils and rosemary. Definitely easy and definitely delicious. You barely notice that it's all wheat and dairy free, but this must be such an enormous bonus for people with intolerances. I can't wait to try more!!

Never successfully used a cookery book more than once. I'm on recipe number 4 now and really enjoying exploring food. I keep getting excited about the next recipe. Who knew that I'd like black pepper on grapefruit? Simple to follow, short ingredient lists, not too much filler chat. Unusual ingredients (there aren't many) are fully explained. I have a fair few odd dietary reqirements so by the time I've skipped all the recipes there's usually precious little left in a cookery book for me, even the specialist ones but it's a thick book and I can't see me running out of recipes any time soon. Several recipes have meat in them but there's plenty for vegetarians too, even some vegan options. Favourite recipe so far is the buckwheat gallettes (pancakes) best served with a fried egg, some sauteed/fried mushrooms and anything else you might choose for a fried breakfast - very simple, very authentically french (the gallette and fried egg bit - they do taste just like the ones on holiday in France) and infinitely better than any buckwheat pancake mix I've tried from a packet.

Only got this a few days ago but my wife and I both love it. Fabulous looking food, but lighter in nature, fresh tastes, minimal dairy and wheat. Such a cliché but it really is just what we've been wanting. First dish we tried was an excellent chicken casserole, loads of flavour and satisfying without being bloating. Fabulous salads and some interesting milk alternatives to make at home. This will be number one on our cookbook shelf for some time to come.
