Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Making ice-cream at home can be tons of fun, and Rival's GC8250 Soft Serve ice-cream maker adds a new twist--classic soft-serve in a star pattern, perfect for cones. The fast-freezing gel canister needs to go into the freezer for at least eight hours (or preferably overnight). Assemble the ice-cream maker, pour in a chilled recipes' worth of ice-cream mix and in 20-35 minutes it's ready to serve. There's no salt or ice to fuss with and you don't have to monitor the process by stirring or hand cranking; it's all done automatically.

The Rival GC8250 Soft Serve ice-cream maker has an automatic timer that starts when you turn the machine on. After 22 minutes a tone will sound for 10 seconds and the indicator light will change from red to green, indicating that the ice cream is ready. (For firmer ice cream, transfer soft-serve ice cream to a plastic container and place in the freezer until it reaches the desired texture.) The clear plastic cover locks in place while the paddle rotates. When the time is up, just tilt the whole canister, rest it on the non-skid bracer feet on the canister collar, and press the dispenser button.

Cleaning is very easy; warm soapy water will do the trick and there is a brush for getting to the hard-to-reach parts. (The upper motor section should not be immersed in water.) The gel canister should not contact hot water until it is near room temperature, and it should be completely dry before being frozen again. When fully assembled, the Rival Soft Serve ice-cream maker is 25 x 29 x 29 cm tall. The Soft Serve comes with a two-year warranty against defects and a detailed booklet of instructions, recipes and tips. --Garland Withers, Amazon.com

3.0 out of 5 stars WORTH TAKING THE TIME TO EXPERIMENT WITH, 16 Aug 2004
By A Customer
I bought the ice-cream maker because my family enjoy the soft serve variety. It was cheap and sounded easy to use. My first attempt was disastrous - the paddle jammed, due to the mixture having frozen around the edges. I was going to take it back, but decided I hadn't given it a fair chance!. I tried again, using the enclosed strawberry recipe, but leaving the canister in the freezer for 12 hours instead of 24. Also, as most of the ingredients were already chilled from the fridge, I used the mixture without pre-chilling. The result was impressive whippy-style ice-cream after 20 minutes. After dispensing 4 cones, there was enough left to place in a tub in the freezer for future use as scoop ice-cream. I'm glad I persevered with it because it is fun. I am sure that you eventually learn the correct timings for your favourite recipe, as mixtures and freezer temperatures vary so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely ice-cream, 31 Aug 2004
By A Customer
This machine did exactly as promised. We have made lovely ice-cream using the machine and have not been dissapointed. Only once did it go wrong when I used a recipe off the internet containing eggs. This was too heavy a recipe for the machine to cope with. However, we scooped the mixture out (which had frozen very rapidly) and had lovely ice-cream anyway.

The motor has never cut-out on us yet, and we usually have ice-cream ready in 20 minutes after pouring the mixture into the machine.

Make sure that you freeze the tub sufficiently and use soft ice-cream recipes rather than any old recipe. Experiment and have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Whippy, 11 Aug 2004
By A Customer
This ice cream maker makes a really good Mr Whippy. I made the lemon ice cream recipe in the leaflet and it was really tasty.

The machine is easy to use. I just had to freeze the canister, make the ice cream, chill it and then pour it into the maker. Within 30 minutes all I had to do was press the button and I had my Whippy.

The cleaning brush included in the box is also really useful to get to the hard to reach places when cleaning up.

I am going to have raspberry ice cream next.
