3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as White Lies' first album 12 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
An OK album, but I was expecting much more after 'To Lose My Life', which was one of the best CDs I'd bought for a long chalk.
'Ritual' is a bit samey, without the variety of 'To Lose My life'. It's ok to settle on a style, but I think the boys have gone too far with this.

But there are some good tracks, which the more I hear the more I like. 'In love' is good, not so sure about 'bigger than us', and 'turn the bells' is the one that sticks in my head out of all of them. 'Power & glory' would be brilliant if it wasn't for that annoying little squeak through the first half - what's all that about, totally ruins it.

I usually listen to music in the car, but this is one that does deserve an at-home listen, as some of the musical details get lost in the road noise.

Hoping the next album will rediscover some of the freshness. Please guys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 18 Jun 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this album for the song 'Bigger Than Us' which I saw them perform at Glastonbury several years ago. I find the song really poignant, but the rest of the album was enjoyable enough to encourage me to buy 2 more of their albums. Well worth a listen and I defy you not to like 'Bigger Than Us'

4.0 out of 5 stars Ah the 80's... 22 Mar 2013

Do You Remember the Dark Wave of the Glorious 80's? Good. Now you can listen again that kind of music in a modern point of view. And the story goes on...

4.0 out of 5 stars You could be one of us! 18 Aug 2012

As a big fan of White Lies' debut album, i was excited to hear of their second release. Its fair to say it takes some getting used too. On first listen i thought it was just dodgey synths and metallic noises, but after some repeated listening i realised that its actually very good. Gone are the echoing guitars to be replaced by distant synths. Still, its an interesting album.

'Strangers' has a grand sound that would fit on their debut. While 'Bigger Than Us' might be their best song to date, packed with a massive chorus and catchy rhythm. 'Peace and Quiet' is brilliant, having a very minimal sound and 'Streetlights' sounds a lot like Joy Division. In other areas 'Holy Ghost' has an Industrial feel to it and its excellent ending may be the best thing here, while 'The Power & The Glory' is eerie and builds wonderfully throughtout.

Is it as good as 'To Loose My Life'? No. But it is an accomplished, different style album and is well worth a listen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as 'To Lose My Life' 10 May 2011
By Michele
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Enjoyed the album, but it lacked some of the energy and diversity of 'To Lose My Life' (a truly excellent album). Certainly not as memorable and it definitely inspired no singing along whilst driving! Unable to connect with it in the same way as their first album.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK second album 24 Dec 2013
By Hynes
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Listened to this a couple of times, then pretty much ignored it for the next 6-9 months. Just gone back and although it's no way near the standard of "To Lose My Life" which I play quite often. It is better than I first thought though.
Just shows that the second album is still the hardest to get right.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment 7 Sep 2013
Format:Audio CD
The first album 'To Lose My Life..' was always going to be a difficult act to follow with it's great singalong and catchy tunes. It was one of our most played albums in 2008/9/10 and they were great live.
So really excited when this album was released but it was just a huge disappointment - some overblown production and orchestration just killed the songs and after a few listens it has been at the bottom of the pile for the past couple of years.
Perhaps I should have listened to it before I bought it!
The third album has just been released and I have yet to listen to it - let's hope it proves that this album was just a blip.

5.0 out of 5 stars surprisingly good second album 1 May 2013

Format:Audio CD
After really enjoying their first album, I thought the follow-up was going to be difficult at best. How wrong i was. Although not as instant as it's prequel, I must say I reagard this as a better album. I'ts definitely worth the wait for the songs to finally arrive, as they are generally more subtle and harder to grasp, yet definitely more satisfying. great great album.
