Risky business was definitely a book of two halves for me, while there were things I really liked about it, there were also things that I really struggled to get onboard with. Melissa Cutler is an author new to me, and I was interested to see what this book would offer up. The synopsis is intriguing, and I wanted to see what twist she could put on the wounded warrior aspect that has become popular as a trope at the moment.

Welcome to Destiny Falls, New York, home of the Bomb Squad—an ice hockey team full of rugged military heroes.

In that respect I was happy, Theo as well as his fellow Bomb Squad veterans Will, Liam, Brandon and the aging Duke were 100% the kind of guys a reader is going to fall head over heels in love with. Ranging from ornery and blunt, to smooth and charming they are all battling their own demons, whilst trying in the most part to maintain a facade of being happy with their lot in life. The camaraderie and their team dynamic were perfect. Theo falls into the ornery category, and boy does he do it well.

”Have you ever seen a hungry bear? Because they don't throw tantrums. They devour.”

The story is a little different as well, what with Ice Hockey and Canal Boats in a small town setting, being the main aspects of the connection between Theo and Allison, and I liked the originality of it. The sexy times were great, and the generally building of the secondary characters in connection with the development of the series as a whole was spot on.

What essentially lost this book stars was Allison Whitely, and her abhorrent leech of a sister Chelsea.

”I was looking for a man to finance my dream of being a stay-at-home mom and he was looking for a wife to run his house, raise his kids, and make him look good.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very well written with strong characters and plenty of emotion. I loved Theo from the start and felt for him in his struggles to overcome his war injuries. I would recommend reading this book and look forward to more in the series

My Review:
Yes, I cried in this one. Yes, it's that good. There's just something so tragic about both Allison and Liam's background. These are wounded characters, but in the best way because regardless of how contentious things are between them in the beginning, they are perfect for one another.

The story starts with Allison and her morbid fear of water. After a near-drowning at age seven, every significant, life-altering (i.e. bad) event in Allison's life has happened in the midst of water...including finding out that her husband is a skeezy criminal...which threw her into labor...in the middle of a deluging rainstorm. She has a phobia, so it's a bit ironic when in the divorce and criminal proceedings with her husband that the only thing she gets out of it is a boat rental company located at the edge of a canal.

But Liam had dibs on this company first. He's run it and kept it afloat for 10 years and had an agreement from Allison's husband to sell it to him. Something that he wants Allison to honor. But Allison has nothing else...including a place to live (the business has an apartment located upstairs) so she refuses to honor that agreement.

If Liam was anyone else, he could just leave and find a new job and home (oh yeah, his home is one of the boats owned by the business, too...something else that was agreed upon to be sold to him). But Liam suffered a debilitating traumatic brain injury in the Canadian Army which left it impossible to do most jobs. The explanation of his issues left me in tears for what he lost...this guy...gah, it broke my heart.

I love how this story progressed. Even though both characters are physically drawn to the other, they truly hate each other's guts just because of the threat the other has on their very livelihood. They are both simply in survival mode which means they are attacking the thing that threatens them and it made for some seriously sparking scenes when they clashed. I loved how Allison gets a special pleasure out of pushing Liam's buttons and how he gradually adjusts his reactions to that throughout the book. The scenes in the bar were fantastic and I loved them drunk together. Such a sweet, funny, romantic scene.

I loved the town and the entire story line about the Bomb Squad hockey team...hot, sexy, wounded ex-soldiers that have overcome and now play some rocking, competitive hockey. Tell me that's not a winner...and the guys are awesome. But they've all been wounded. There is some serious angst to be found in this crew. But at the same time, they are protective and alpha...I love how they encircled Allison when it looked like things could fall apart for her. They are loyal and protective and sweet...at the same time they all have a great, fun bromance happening between all the guys. I cannot wait for more of these books.

My only complaint...I want these in print so I can keep them on my keeper shelf!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

HASH(0x92c57e04) out of 5 stars Loved the Bomb Squad! 19 Aug. 2014

I love books with a strong heroine. Allison Whitely is just that. I also love books about tough, brooding military and ex-military men. That would describe Theo Lacroix. Put the two of them together and watch out! They are both injured souls…for different reasons - but it gives them commonality. What brings them into each others orbit is Cloud Nine, a boat charter business. Theo is managing it, with hopes of owning it one day. Allison is planning on running it as a source of income to support her and her 8-month-old daughter. Her husband is going to prison, so what choice does she have? It’s the only thing she got from him.

Theo is also a star player for the Destiny Falls ice hockey team, Bomb Squad, comprised of rugged military heroes. His teammates are counting on him to win an upcoming high profile hockey match. He does not need the distraction of a sexy woman that is trying to upend his entire lifestyle.

Theo and his Bomb Squad teammates Will, Liam, Brandon and the aging Duke were my favorite part of the book. The multi-personalities of this group of guys were fun and made their camaraderie believable. They all had demons, but managed to keep them at bay enough to maintain a facade of happiness and normalcy. Their backgrounds cemented them as a dynamic team. You will fall in love with these guys. I certainly did.

The relationship between the broody Theo and Allison worked. She stood up to him and knew how to push his buttons -which was just what he needed. The chemistry between these two was slow to develop, but when it ignited…watch out! It burned bright and hot!

This is the first book in the Bomb Squad series. I am very much looking forward to the continuation of the storyline. This is my first experience with Melissa Cutler, but it won’t be my last. I love her wit and ability to develop her characters slowly, so the reader feels a part of the story as they get to know them. Warning: Allison will get on your nerves at times, and I wanted to slap her sister, Chelsea.

RISKY BUSINESS holds your interest throughout. It is not your typical romance and has an interesting plot twist. It is definitely a recommended read…filled with friendship, passion, and most of all, a love that grows beyond physical attraction. You will not regret reading this one.

I received an eBook copy from the publisher and NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review. All conclusions are my own.

REVIEW:
Risky Business is the first book in Melissa Cutler's new series, The Bomb Squad. I love Melissa Cutler's books and was really looking forward to her new series. After reading the first book I'm hooked. Hot military guys that play hockey together. Ummm...yep that sounds good to me. I loved it and can't wait for more books in the series. Risky Business is full of action, suspense, and steamy romance. It captured and held my attention from start to finish. I highly recommend this book for romantic suspense lovers.

HASH(0x924ed3e4) out of 5 stars Loved It! 23 Aug. 2014

Wow. This was such a great book! It had everything a good romance needs...drama, hot guys, great friends, motorcycles, and hockey. Really, what more do you need? Seriously, this is a great series about a group of guys who were wounded in war in some way who get together for friendship, brotherhood, and to play hockey. Each has a story and a different disability, some visible and some aren't, but they come together with the help of their coach, each other and hopefully a really great woman.

In this book, which is the first in the series, we meet Theo and Allison. Both have had a pretty rough time lately, but things heat up the second they meet for the first time. Without trying to give anything away I'll just say that they had a really rough time getting to know each other, but it pays off for both of them. Theo, who not only plays hockey, but speaks French and rides a motorcycle (that's like, my dream man!) is just trying to buy the company he's been running for the past five years. Allison just had the ultimate wake-up call about her husband and is trying to get back on solid ground. Once the two meet and try to figure it all out sparks are flying everywhere and it's so much fun to watch.

We also got a taste for the other guys on the team and Allison's new friends and you can see potential matchup that are gonna rock Destiny Falls. I can't wait to read more about these guys! As a disabled person myself, it's a great thing to see the main characters portrayed as heroes, but also guys that just want to get on with life and find the love they so deserve no matter their physical makeup.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

”I was looking for a man to finance my dream of being a stay-at-home mom and he was looking for a wife to run his house, raise his kids, and make him look good. I thought it was the perfect setup.”

Err no, infact HELL NO this belief and Allison’s acceptance of marriage to a man she essentially saw as a cash-cow (no love required), really did put me off her completely. I don't condone cheating, lying etc, but when you know a man has essentially married you as window dressing for his political aspirations, you also must realise that he is going to be looking for his jollies elsewhere, which is exactly what he ends up doing, amongst other things, and she is literally left holding the baby without a pot to pee in.

My intense dislike for Allison and her old-fashioned beliefs aside, the relationship between her and Theo really worked, I loved that she stood up to him, pushed his buttons and wouldn’t take his s***. Their chemistry was a slow, seductive burn as the book progressed, and when it did eventually ignite… Hot sexy-times ensued.

”I’d love to know if there’s any skills behind the promises that body makes.”

Although book one of the Bomb Squad series wasn’t a 100% winner for me, the writing and the secondary character development in this book highlight pretty well that the potential for the following books is high. I would happily sit down with book two, Undefeated, due late November 2014, too see where the author take us next with these guys.
