Product Description

Product Description

This book arose out of the author′s awareness that there was little material relating to the assessment of risks for people with learning disabilities, even though many care workers and health and social services staff are required to carry out such assessments for their clients.

Sellars provides a readily understood explanation of the concept of risk, and an accessible discussion of the key areas where risks need to be assessed in the lives of people with learning disabilities. It describes an approach to assessing risks that is systematic but relatively simple, and emphasizes the need to see risk assessment as an ongoing process in which all interested parties can consider the potential risks in any situation.

From the Back Cover

Risk assessment has become a major concern in recent years. However, the vast majority of published work refers to the assessment of risks in people with serious mental health problems, and particularly those who are prone to offending. This book arose out of the author′s awareness that there was little material relating to the assessment of risks for people with learning disabilities, even though many care workers and health and social services staff are required to carry out such assessments for their clients.

The book provides a readily understood explanation of the concept of risk, and an accessible discussion of the key areas where risks need to be assessed in the lives of people with learning disabilities. 4.0 out of 5 stars Great to see risk assessment addressed in this area, 10 Dec 2002
By Mary Fox (Blandford Forum, Dorset United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I think this is probably the first book available on this topic dedicated to people with learning disabilities. This is an important area, and I was pleased to find that the book had been put together in an accessible way. The book is well laid out, and the text is broken by lots of useful headings. It 's well written and easy to read and find your way around. This means it is suitable for staff and carers at all levels. It should form an important source, easily referred to.
