Avalon Code 26 April 2012

Fun:
To be honest, for the first hour or so of this game, I was not impressed. I had heard that Avalon Code had come from the creative minds behind Harvest Moon and my favourite gaming series, Rune Factory, so I had high hopes. Avalon Code took a little bit of getting used to, but once you get into it, you'll really enjoy it.

You can play as a boy, default name Yumil, or a girl, default name Tia. You're a peasant living on the outskirts of Rhoan Town. To put it simply, the world is coming to an end (a little morbid, I know, but still an interesting consept) and you are the Chosen One entrusted with the Book of Prophecy, a magical book that can record anything in the world. It is your job to design the 'new world' by recording everything you encounter on your travels, such as flowers, people, weapons, accessories etc. You are helped by the Book Spirits, the energetic Fire Spirit, Rempo, the cheerful Forest Spirit, Mieli, the cold Ice Spirit, Neaki and the serious Lightning Spirit, Ur.

You control the Book of Prophecy through the touch screen. Everything you scan with the Book of Prophecy has 'codes' of various shapes and types, such as Fire. These codes can be transfered from one object or person etc. to another. By rearranging codes, you can create new weapons and accessories, change the personalities of characters, strengthen items and even weaken monsters. The more things you scan, the more codes you'll have to play around with.

You can also form relationships in Avalon Code. You do this by giving presents and completing side quests. There are six male romantic interests, from an army general to a prince and six female romantic interests, from a princess to an elf. These romantic interests also include the Book Spirits.

Though it took me a while to get into, I loved Avalon Code and have already completed the game twice. Even after you've completed the main story, there is so much to do in the form of side quests, relationships and finding as much as you can to scan with the Book of Prophecy.

I highly recommend this game. Buy it now :)

Fun:
I had rather high hopes for this game, with it coming from the creative minds behind both the Harvest Moon & Rune Factory series. I have long been a fan of Harvest Moon (right back from the days of Gameboy Colour!) and a few years ago I was introduced to an installment of the Rune Factory series, which I also greatly enjoyed.

I'll be honest - I was really let down by this game. It had a lot of hope and promise & I thought the idea of being able to fall in love, as you can in both Harvest Moon & Rune Factory, seemed like a great addition... however the incessantly similar (and bland) dungeons that reapetedly cropped up throughout this game were a genuine bore. Truthfully, you complete a certain objective or event and you'll find yourself in a faceless dungeon which comprises of generic rooms, furthermore comprising of generic enemies which you must complete within a time limit. Beat this "dungeon" and BAM! - you find yourself in yet the same situation again around half an hour later.

To put it simply, this game is boring. Unless you're into mind-numbing bordeom and repetitivness, I suggest you save your cash for something worthwhile like Final Fantasy or Zelda. Seriously guys, stick to making Harvest Moon & Rune Factory please!!
