While I have played many RPGs this is the first I have tried on the DS. Controls are easy and you do not need the stylus.
You can choose from 9 characters - a fighter, archer and magic type from 3 different families. You begin in a town with various traders to buy and sell weapons, armour and potions, healers, and people to send you on quests. There is also a small training ground to give you practice on the basic controls of the game. Once you start adventuring you rise through the levels by killing monsters of increasing toughness and are given 3 stat points each time you progress to improve your strength etc.
A departure from other games I have played is the idea of schools and arts. Early in the game you will randomly be given a school which is a bit similar to a martial arts 'style' which then allows you to gather and improve arts. My character has been given the 'bird' school and while the powers I have so far are helpful, none appear based on birds, flight or anything else avian. Use of powers is dependant on a power bar, similar to mana bars found in other games.
The other interesting feature is the robot companion you can obtain so you do not contstantly have to fight alone.
The graphics are poor. It is fortunate that each monter appears with a name under its life bar. The goblins looked like an Ewok and a lizard type creature was actually a frog!
Overall a good way to waste time on your DS if you like RPGs
